Promotion to a Senior Project Manager role doesn't just happen It takes intentionality and focusing on the RIGHT things Don't: ? Wait for someone to notice your work ? Focus on/highlight only technical tasks ? Think promotion is only based on tenure Do: ? Act like a Senior PM now Speak up in meetings. Offer strategic solutions. Mentor others. ? Ask for feedback Proactively seek input from leadership. Look to grow in new ways. Determine actionable paths towards your goal(s). ? Build influence across teams Align stakeholders. Make allies of organizational teams/leaders. Create a unified vision and promote understanding. ? Start marketing yourself Promotions don't always come to the most qualified. They often go to those that speak loud about what they're doing. Start bragging about the good stuff (professionally of course). Promotion doesn't come by accident. It's earned by demonstrating you already belong at that next level. Go get it. ??

??♂? Technical skills alone will not get your career to its next step. If you want to stand out and advance, you need the power to influence others! Influence is the bridge between having great ideas and turning them into impactful solutions or meaningful relationships. It's what helps us rally our teams and customers around a new initiative, to build buy-in for innovation, and to align us towards a particular vision or goal. Here are a few ways I've seen others use to manifest a positive influence to those around them: (1) ?? Focus on your personal brand -- Who are you? Why should others care? What is your value proposition? (2) ?? Build relationships with your stakeholders -- The better we understand each other and look out for each other, the easier it becomes to team up and achieve great things. (3) ?? Drive real impact and value -- It's not enough to just be well-liked; you must ensure you are delivering value that your stakeholders want in the first place. First, we establish our identity. Then, we build a relationship. And finally, we claim wins. Growing as a PM in a Big Corporation without Playing Politics After spending 15 years in the start-up world, I've now been working in a big corporation for 5 years. In those 5 years I've received 2 promotions, reaching the level of Senior Director of Product Management. Here are the tips I've learned: Grow your people When your team members grow and need to get promoted to the same level as you are, it often necessitates your own advancement. Be effective Be the person who delivers consistently, even if it's in small increments. Over time, you'll become known for your reliability and effectiveness. Trust the process of the best people shining through We all see people getting promoted who we believe don’t deserve it. However, incompetence is eventually revealed. If you play the long game and focus on your performance, those who are undeserving will eventually move on. Be ready for this time. What do you think? As August unfolds, I find myself reflecting on my journey from a Product Marketing Manager to a Chief Operations Officer. It’s been a path filled with challenges, growth, and countless learning experiences. Starting as a Product Marketing Manager, I was eager to make an impact and drive results. Each campaign, every product launch, taught me valuable lessons about strategy, creativity, and the power of a dedicated team. My role evolved, and I embraced new responsibilities that stretched my capabilities and broadened my perspective. Transitioning to the role of Chief Operations Officer was both exhilarating and daunting. It required a deeper understanding of the intricate workings of the organization, from streamlining processes to fostering a culture of excellence and innovation. This role has been a testament to the importance of adaptability, continuous learning, and the unwavering belief in one’s potential. To everyone navigating their career paths, remember this: growth often lies beyond our comfort zones. It’s a refreshing experience to step outside the daily grind of my organization and hear how others in product marketing are navigating similar obstacles, as well as picking up tips that help us elevate our work. ?? ???? One of the things I love most is the diversity of perspectives - we’re a small group (not everyone pictured), all from different walks of life, and it’s so powerful to learn from each other. I've been diligently working on a passion project that has been years in the making. Well, truth be told, it was years in the making if you count discussing it without taking any action! ?? Recently, I've made significant progress towards bringing my solo creation to life. This Friday marks a significant milestone as I have a photo shoot and a tasting for my project. Feeling a bit lost on Sunday, I regrouped and revisited my product management, product marketing, and GTM fundamentals. By creating a checklist and a simple project plan for the week, I was able to kickstart the process. It's fascinating how much we can leverage our professional experiences for our passion projects. In this venture, I've taken on the roles of CEO, CPO, CMO, and CCO. While playing all these roles is a dream, it can also be overwhelming without being grounded by the basics. As you explore your passions or engage in service projects outside your core role, remember that your core strengths and fundamentals from your job can be invaluable in these leadership positions.
