Southern Launch fully approved for Whalers Way rocket pad in South Australia. by Simon Mansfield - Sydney, Australia (SPX) "We have designed the Whalers Way Orbital Launch Complex with versatility in mind," Lloyd explained. "We understand that access to space is not one-size-fits-all. The complex has been developed in a location that enables different launch trajectories and azimuths so space technology companies can get to where they need to be."? Leading Australian spaceport provider Southern Launch has received full approvals for the Whalers Way Orbital Launch Complex, located on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. Construction of permanent facilities will now move forward, with the first launches planned for late 2025. Southern Launch CEO Lloyd Damp emphasized the importance of access to space, noting, "Access to space is critical for humanity with many existing launch sites operating near capacity. The Whalers Way Orbital Launch Complex enables rapid access to orbit thanks to our favorable year-round weather and minimal sea and air traffic. Additionally, Southern Launch has secured all required approvals under Australian legislation, further removing obstacles to orbit for space companies." The Whalers Way Orbital Launch Complex offers an impressive range of launch capabilities, supporting trajectories from 55 to 177 degrees, including polar, sun-synchronous, and 135-degree inclination orbits. The site will have two launch pads, vehicle assembly buildings, clean rooms, and integration facilities, allowing for up to 42 launches per year. The approvals granted cover all environmental requirements, ensuring that rocket companies can use the site without needing additional assessments. Space technology firm True Anomaly has selected Firefly Aerospace’s Alpha rocket to launch its autonomous Jackal orbital vehicle for a U.S. Space Force rapid-response demonstration mission, the companies announced Oct. 17. Colorado-based True Anomaly will support the military’s Victus Haze mission, scheduled for 2025 as part of the Tactically Responsive Space (TacRS) program. The partnership with Firefly includes provisions for two additional missions, as both companies aim to strengthen their position in the military’s rapid-response space operations sector. Victus Haze will test the Space Force’s ability to counter orbital threats on short notice. The mission involves a complex choreography between True Anomaly’s Jackal spacecraft and a separate vehicle from Rocket Lab, which will conduct proximity operations once in orbit. “Victus Haze pushes the boundaries further by requiring a launch within just 24 hours of receiving an order, with operations beginning shortly after the satellites reach orbit,” Firefly said in a statement. The mission builds on Firefly’s September 2023 launch of a Millennium Space satellite for the Victus Nox TacRS mission, marking the company’s second collaboration with the Space Force. The costs of small satellites are generally less than $10M & will be less than $1M. ??Turion Space Secures $1.9M Space Force Contract for Debris-Capture Tech Turion Space, a space tech startup based in Irvine, California, has won a $1.9 million contract from SpaceWERX, the U.S. Space Force’s technology arm, to develop autonomous spacecraft docking and maneuvering systems. This technology aims to engage uncooperative space objects and deorbit inactive satellites. Turion, co-founded by former SpaceX engineer Ryan Westerdahl, is also working on in-space mobility and non-Earth imaging, with plans for a debris-capturing demonstration by 2026. SpaceWorks Enterprises, Inc. (SEI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with rocket range operator Southern Launch to use Koonibba Test Range in South Australia for Re-Entry Devices (RED) returns. The Koonibba Test Range, located in the outback and covers 15,800 square miles, making it suitable to accept the returns of space technology from orbit. SpaceWorks Vice-President for Defense and Space Systems Tyler Kunsa said: “With this next phase in our development process, we will continue to pursue our goal of offering the lowest price payload return capability from orbit."
