Nothing prepared me for being a breastfeeding mother in the NICU. I had breastfed 3 kids for 18 months or more with no problems, but when #4 was born, he was not able to breastfeed for weeks. I was pump dependent and that was incredibly challenging. Fortunately, we were able to successfully breastfeed for 2.5 years with no supplementation, but that is rarely the case for the NICU families I care for.
