The United States Marine Corps is closely monitoring the first deployment of its amphibious combat vehicles (ACVs) to the Philippines for Balikatan exercises. This marks the program's first chance to see how the vehicles perform and are maintained when operated from a ship, rather than just from land. The ACV program's executive officer, Steve Bowdren, said this ship-based operation "raises a whole other set of challenges for the Marines" in terms of repairs and routine care. The lessons learned on maintenance and sustainment will allow the program office to update tactics, techniques, and procedures, and potentially drive engineering changes for future ACV variants. The Marine Corps has set up a Readiness Control Board to study all lessons learned, including on maintenance, training, parts availability, and anything else that impacts readiness. What really sticks out to me is flying combat aircraft, specifically the F-35C Lightning II or the F/A-18 Super Hornet. From this article I learned about other aircraft that sparked my interest such as the EA-18G Growler. This article helps me gain a better idea of aircraft that'd I'd be interested in flying, what it takes to become a Pilot or NFO, and the differences between Pilot and NFO. As an intern at Congressman John Curtis' district office, I am able to see the relationship between military and government and this helps me understand what may future career may entail.

Osprey pilots and air and maintenance crews with the 3rd Marine Airwing have started training with MV-22 Ospreys again following the lifting of the aircraft's grounding. The grounding was implemented after a November crash that resulted in the tragic loss of seven lives. The first squadrons to resume training are those next in line for deployment. The United States Marine Corps has 17 squadrons using over 300 Osprey aircraft, making it the largest user of this type of aircraft among all branches. The return to flight operations will be conducted in a deliberate and methodical manner to ensure the safety and confidence of the crews. The grounding provided an opportunity for a thorough review of the crash and the implementation of additional safety procedures. This is news to me and probably to many. I went through Jump School in 1970 and remember the 5-mile run as well as double-timing everywhere. There are valid reasons for dropping the requirement and it sounds like the course is still producing qualified parachutists safely. However, there is a good argument for maintaining standards or even increasing them. The minimum is never enough for warfighting. Need to strive for the best although for a course, one needs a threshold. Additional stress is part of the training to overcome the Fog of War. Should always aim to provide units with trained Soldiers in top condition, not add to unit training and readiness workloads. Want Soldiers to "Be All That They Can Be." How might amphibious forces support maritime campaigning in future scenarios? That's the research question explored by one of the teams continuing work from September's?Warfare Innovation Continuum?(WIC) workshop on Integrated Naval Campaigning. The design challenge was:?How might the confluence of new technologies provide opportunities for new operational concepts in executing integrated naval campaigning across the full Spectrum of Conflict? We checked in with the team looking at 21st Century Amphibious Operations Concept. Why it matters:?The team identified several benefits from amphibious operations: * Highly diversified amphibious capabilities and operation types increase scalability, integrate better with other stand-in forces, and make targeting complex for adversaries. * Streamlined command relationships generate decision advantage. * Conscious and careful "operationalization” of phasing ensures all activities contribute to campaign objectives. What’s happened since September:?Research has been led by members of the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory I Futures Directorate (MCWL) and Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Carderock to develop a baseline amphibious ship concept that will support the 21st?Century Amphibious Operations concept. How it works:?The main goal for the concept: develop a low-signature amphibious ship that can deliver and retract a company-sized maneuver force to a beach in a contested littoral environment. An NPS student wargame?has already provided insights about potential relationships between stand-in forces and amphibious forces. Lesson learned: There does not appear to be a "one-size-fits-all" command and control template for stand-in forces operating with distinctly amphibious forces. Certain C2 models are more effective than others in given situations. Plus, force design efforts by the UK’s Royal Marines?have reinforced the team’s view of the future operating environment, and many of their proposed solutions align with the hypotheses of our concepts.
