The U.S. Army’s Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW) Battery, part of the 1st Multi-Domain Task Force (MDTF), made history by participating in Exercise Resolute Hunter 24-2, a joint/combined exercise on the base from June 25-27, 2024. This exercise marked a significant milestone, as it was the first time the?Army’s hypersonic capability was integrated into the bi-annual joint training?exercise. Hosted by the?Naval Aviation?Warfighting Development Center (NAWDC) at Naval Air Station Fallon, Nevada, Resolute Hunter 24-2 is the Department of Defense’s only dedicated Battle Management, Command and Control, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (BMC2ISR) exercise. This year’s event brought together three?participating nations?and four joint services for a three-week training exercise. The exercise demonstrated the battery’s ability to integrate with higher joint echelons and sustain operations over an extended period. Bravo Battery, 5th Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery (Long Range Fires Battalion), 1MDTF, successfully employed its force package for over 72 hours, showcasing the LRHW digital kill chain in collaboration with joint partners and providing real-time situational awareness to the joint command post. The?Army’s long-range hypersonic weapon?development has been a long-term effort, with Soldiers contributing to the prototyping process since 2019. After receiving the initial hardware delivery in March 2021, the unit initiated New Equipment Training (NET) in September 2021, which consisted of four three-week iterations. The Royal Thai Army recently conducted live firing tests of the newly upgraded Bofors 40mm L/70 OES (Opto-Electronic System) equipped with a new fire control system (FCS). Spearheaded by the Army Research and Development Office (ARDO), these tests mark a pivotal moment in Thailand’s military modernization efforts. The firing tests, conducted on April 20, 2024, at the Khao Phu Lon artillery shooting range in Lopburi Province, showcased the firepower and precision of the upgraded Bofors cannons. Utilizing a new domestic modernized FCS, developed through collaborative efforts between ARMISYS Supply Co., Ltd., the Royal Thai Army Welfare Department, and Kasetsart University, the tests involved two Bofors 40mm L/70 OES cannons engaging both stationary and moving aerial targets at a range of 1,000 meters. This modernization initiative stems from the Royal Thai Army’s commitment to enhancing the efficiency of its military equipment. With an allocated budget of 446,500,000 baht ($13,996,873.07) per unit, the project aims to refurbish and optimize the Bofors anti-aircraft cannons, setting new standards for air defense capabilities. Notably, the project has already delivered upgraded units for training purposes within the 2nd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion, 2nd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment. At the heart of this development is the external fire control system, designed to coordinate the firing of a group of four Bofors 40mm L/70 cannons. The Romanian ministry of defence has contracted with Rheinmetall to thoroughly modernize the country’s Oerlikon GDF 103 air defence artillery systems. For the Düsseldorf-based technology enterprise, this is the first ever major order from Romania, a NATO and EU member state. Worth around €328 million, the contract encompasses the delivery of four systems as well as training, spare parts and other services.?Two systems are to be delivered within the next two years, and two more within three years. “This substantial first-time order from the Romanian government widens our footprint in Central Europe. It also underscores Rheinmetall’s role as a leading supplier of ground-based air defence systems. Moreover, the order will bolster the defensive capabilities of the EU and NATO on Europe’s eastern flank, something we’re very happy about”, states Armin Papperger, chairman of the executive board of Rheinmetall AG. In Satu Mare, Romania, close to the country’s borders with Ukraine and Hungary, Rheinmetall has already been operating a service hub for several months now, where it maintains and services military vehicles. Each of the systems ordered consists of an Oerlikon Skymaster TLCN fire control system; an X-Band Tactical Acquisition Radar 3D, or X-TAR3D; six 35mm GDF009 TREO Oerlikon Twin Guns, including autoloader; and two heavy-duty special trucks for transporting the fire control system and the tracking radar.? ? Rheinmetall’s Skynex? An upgraded Oerlikon anti-aircraft artillery system, the Group’s Skynex air defence solution is a modular, flexible ground-based air defence system for the protection of stationary objects and installations in close and short range. Representing the latest state of the art, it is capable of simultaneously engaging up to four targets at very short range, including ground targets. Cannon-based air defence solutions from the Skynex product family lend themselves especially well to close-range operations where guided missiles are ineffective. Lithuania has signed an agreement for the purchase of multi-functional Thales GM200 MM/C radar systems from Thales Nederland, the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence announced on Wednesday. The contract is valued at EUR 126.7 million. "The purpose of these radars is to identify the positions of the enemy's indirect fire systems based on the trajectory of fired projectiles and to ensure a rapid response to enemy fire," said Lithuanian Defence Minister Arvydas Anuszauskas, as quoted in the ministry's statement. The Minister emphasized that "this is a very important purchase" and that "the radar systems will significantly strengthen the artillery capabilities" of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. The Defence Ministry highlights that the radars acquired by Lithuania are characterized by advanced solutions, which will provide military units with technological advantage and greater operational flexibility. The Thales GM200 MM/C systems have already been purchased by the armed forces of the Netherlands and Norway. “This Government-to-Government contract between the Netherlands and Lithuania illustrates the strong European defence cooperation. On February 15, the Dutch Armed Forces showcased the Thales Ground Master 200 Multi Mission Compact Radar (GM200 MM/C), a state-of-the-art multifunctional radar system. The acquisition of at least nine of these radar units was decided by the Dutch military in 2019, marking a substantial investment in the country’s defence capabilities. Six of these units are earmarked for Fire Support Command, while the remaining three will enhance the capabilities of the Ground-Based Air Defence Command. All units are expected to achieve operational readiness by the end of next year, with the first station slated for delivery to the artillery by mid-year. Designed for versatility, the GM200 MM/C can function as both artillery radars, under the fire support command, and as an integral part of air defence systems. The PGZ-PILICA+ consortium has secured another significant contract with the Armament Agency, aimed at bolstering the operational efficiency of the PILICA+ Rocket and Artillery Sets within the Polish Armed Forces. Valued at approximately PLN 1.4 billion gross, this contract encompasses the provision of logistics and training packages, as well as laboratory equipment. The deliveries, set to span from 2024 to 2029, are expected to enhance Poland’s defense capabilities significantly. The PGZ-PILICA+ consortium comprises several key entities in the Polish defense industry, including: Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa SA (Leader), Zak?ady Mechaniczne Tarnów SA, PIT-RADWAR SA, PCO SA, Jelcz Sp. z o. o., Mesko SA, O?rodek Badawczo-Rozwojowy Centrum Techniki Morskiej SA, Wojskowe Zak?ady Uzbrojenia SA and Wojskowe Zak?ady Elektroniczne SA. Additionally, the PGZ-PILICA+ consortium will develop and deliver an executive design for the Ammunition Vehicle (PA2) and the ZRA PILICA+ Laboratory. They will also provide comprehensive technical documentation, conduct training, and offer technical support The PILICA+ program officially commenced on October 4, 2022, through an agreement between the PGZ-PILICA+ consortium and the Armament Agency. This initiative aims to establish the PILICA+ systems as the cornerstone of the Air Force Anti-Aircraft Defense Forces. The primary mission of these systems is to complement the fire zones of short- and medium-range air defense missile systems at low and very low altitudes and to safeguard the Wis?a systems. These systems are engineered to operate autonomously in diverse weather and visibility conditions, leveraging both passive reconnaissance and tracking systems and radar information from battery command posts. The configuration ensures effective reconnaissance, identification, and neutralization of air targets with both missile and artillery fire. The guns’ rate of fire and range also enable engagement with ground and sea targets.
