Imagine you reach a point in your career where you stop developing as a professional; what do you do and how do you get back on that upward trajectory? For Clifford Mascarenhas, choosing growth over comfort meant leaving a prestigious role with V.Group as Chief Marine Mechanical Engineer, a role he had worked up to over a decade. He started as a 1st Assistant Marine Engineer and eventually gained an incredible array of responsibilities. It was a great position but Clifford's goal was to get a job at Seaspan ULC, British Columbia’s largest ship builder and solutions provider to the maritime industry. “I had advanced in my career as far as I could, and I recognized that going back to school would enable me to pursue new opportunities by expanding my knowledge of ship-building,” he says. “UBC’s program in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering offered more than other comparable programs because of its combination of technical and business courses. Engineers need to understand how business decisions are arrived at, and this program helps engineers move into leadership positions by helping them correlate the technical and business aspects.” In March of 2024, Clifford received an offer from Seaspan ULC to work as an Integrated Logistic Support Specialist, with responsibilities that include analyzing the reliability, availability and maintenance aspects of design for the joint support vessels that Seaspan is delivering to the Canadian Coast Guard/Garde c?tière canadienne and Royal Canadian Navy | Marine royale canadienne under Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy. At USP Maritime, we've always believed in embracing a flexible work culture, and this past year, our work-from-home policy has proven not just beneficial for productivity but also for our team's personal passions - particularly winter sports! Our expert marine engineers and naval architects have enjoyed an unforgettable ski season, taking advantage of the freedom to blend work with play. This flexibility has led to an interesting, albeit unexpected, discovery. After a season filled with slopes and snow, our informal data has revealed a fun tidbit: Naval architects might just be the better skiers – or at least the safer ones – compared to our mechanical engineers! While we jest about the competitive spirit between our departments, this season has underscored the value of work-life balance. Our team has returned to their desks rejuvenated, full of stories, and sometimes nursing a few bruises (and cracked ribs & torn ligaments...). It's a reminder that taking time to pursue personal interests and adventures can significantly enrich our professional lives and team dynamics. When I was a student, I remember hearing about the US Industry waking up for World War II. Some called it, "The Miracle of Production," the shift of US industry from consumer goods to wartime production. Even if it was a miracle, there were numerous growing pains to work through and layers of coordination in every layer of production. Most importantly, hard work conducted over multiple shifts fueled the success. In my recent article published a few weeks ago on CIMSEC: Center for International Maritime Security, I offer an alternative to waiting for another miracle. I offer here a potentially unpalatable solution to adopt a modified DuPont Schedule, but I ask everyone who has an interest in this subject of shipyard production, could it potentially be implemented? Could it be modified to be more palatable to all stakeholders? Perhaps most importantly to note, I don't think this could be implemented tomorrow and immediately resolve all issues in shipyard production. There would be growing pains with this path. Someone in the comments mentioned supply chains and hiring more laborers. I think altering the work schedule could assist in attracting new labor to a relatively niche industry, but they are correct. There are a bevy of issues to resolve, but I try to tackle one at a time whenever possible. Again, this may be an unpalatable solution, but what could make it better? Or what have I not considered?
