Boston Scores set an ambitious goal to build a world-class recreation and education center in East Boston for local youth. With the support of the Salesian Boys & Girls Club and many generous donors, this project has come to life, and we are so honored to be a part of it!

I was a quiet, gifted student who fell through the cracks in high school. Though I wanted to go to college, I didn’t know how to do it, nor did I think I even could financially. I didn’t get family support or encouragement, either. I’d heard there were government grants… Without a Pell Grant that funded my first year of college, I would have never attended. But, the days of Pell Grants almost?totally?funding your education are over. Without this government funding schools are left to raise money from private donations to support scholarships, give students the tools they need to succeed, and keep equipment upgraded. Working for a local community college has given me a glimpse of what this looks like. Writing student success stories as well as stories about things going on here, on campus has been eye-opening. Community colleges are essential for many who want to further their educations and they make so much sense! It’s a terrific way to get a certificate, or associate degree, learn a trade, or get a certification credential. It’s a stellar way to learn essentials and get a good foundation before advancing to a four-year university. It’s a way to re-skill and up-skill to advance in the career you’re already in. And one of the best parts is, people who are working, have families, or other things going on in their lives, can have the advantage of a flexible schedule with many classes offering online learning, both synchronously, or asynchronously. Reynolds Community College is having its inaugural Give Day today, to raise much-needed funds to support students and build a stronger future. Please consider giving. No donation is too small! To learn more and make a donation > https://lnkd.in/eEsQKBcA #Staff4ReynoldsGiveDay *FUN FACT: I worked my way through college going to VCU working about 20 hours a week at various jobs. One job I held was as a gardener’s assistant on the estate of Major and Pam Reynolds. Reynolds Community College is named after J. Sargeant Reynolds, Major’s brother. Funny, how things in life seem to connect.

*Link to my TEDx talk below* In my experience working in the nonprofit space and growing up Black in the Pacific Northwest, I’ve observed that we are often incentivized to embrace narratives about ourselves rooted in deficiency and scarcity. Although our community has achieved countless wins and accomplishments, these stories aren’t highlighted nearly as much as our shortcomings by way of systematic prejudice & discrimination. Our good news rarely makes headlines, and our brilliance doesn’t attract the same funding or visibility for our foundations, nonprofits, and businesses. As a result, these successes are often left out of our shared narrative. This gap has an unintended consequence: we tend to forget the resilience and achievements of our community. Our children are growing up unaware of the legacy and sacrifices their grandparents made to secure the lives they live today. Many of us, as adults, have only a limited understanding of the challenges our great-grandparents overcame to create the opportunities we now enjoy. While there’s much we want to change, it’s essential to remember the strength and brilliance that define us. We’re still here, still thriving, still doing remarkable things. There are greater things that many of us talk ourselves out of doing, because we identify with and internalize half of the truth. It’s on us to break the spell and make new agreements about ourselves and our communities. Agreements based on the whole truth. We are unconditioned and unlimited in our creative capacity. Dwell on that and never forget. https://lnkd.in/gMbKMBWs
