Jews around the world culturally know the wisdom of having a Fire Escape Plan to protect their families. This is based on centuries of persecution from the Spanish Inquisition, to Russian Pogroms to the Holocaust. With the global rise in anti-semitism in the last few years (which has amped up significantly since October 7th), American Jews have been engaging our firm to help them with this planning at a previously unheard of rate. ? Today, on the International Day of Non-Violence, we celebrate the profound strength of peace, empathy, and understanding in driving real social change. Non-violence, also known as non-violent resistance, rejects the use of physical force to achieve political or social objectives. As Professor Gene Sharp highlighted, non-violent action is a powerful tool for those who refuse passivity and submission, allowing people to engage in struggles for change without resorting to violence. Non-violence isn't about avoiding conflict—it’s about finding impactful ways to address and resolve it. From protest and persuasion, such as marches and vigils, to non-cooperation, and even non-violent intervention, this approach has been adopted by movements worldwide to achieve justice and equality. Mahatma Gandhi believed that non-violence is the greatest force available to humanity—more powerful than any weapon. Together, let’s continue building institutions and communities that support that noble vision. Let’s create spaces where conflicts are resolved with dialogue and empathy, and where every individual feels safe, respected, and valued. #InternationalDayOfNonViolence #PeacefulChange #GandhiLegacy #NonViolentResistance #SocialJustice #CommunityEmpowerment

Six Things: 1. I embrace #nonviolence, not only as a nonviolence educator and strategist, but as a practitioner. I haven’t perfected it. But I believe its roots and results reflect commitment to love, truth, and justice. 2. Nonviolence is not passive. Nonviolence speaks truth with and to edifices, institutions and individuals that impose power without love; is truthful period; and actively pursues just, humane outcomes. It does not ask you to sit by while people are being dehumanized and murdered. In fact, Kingian nonviolence, which is love-centered and justice-seeking, compels me to act. But it compels me to act with strategy, principles, steps and with focus on short term goals and an ultimate goal. 3. Nonviolence requires being wise, well-informed, and astute about history, current issues and the roots of injustice and inhumanity. 4. I use the nonviolent philosophy and strategy in every area of my life: leadership, relationships, community engagement, pastoring, teaching, mentoring, social change, building a school in Liberia. It works for me. I’m a witness. 5. I firmly believe that nonviolence can help us meet the goals of deconstructing oppressive systems, inclusive of enacting legislation. 6. I’m discovering even more ways to go IN with nonviolence to do the work of justice, including challenging racism and other forms of barrier raising discrimination at their roots and manifestations.
