Yes, October 9th is behind us for this year—but choosing one date to celebrate Ageism Awareness Day just gets it into the news. Our real job is to keep awareness going, and to advocate for a society that respects and values people of all ages. To do that, we need to recognize ageism whenever and wherever it occurs; keep the focus on the real problem (a culture that allows it); and call people in, inviting everyone to be a part of the solution. There are many important things to discuss, and this is one of them. Talk About Ageism #100WordsOnEverydayAgeism #TalkAboutAgeism

Let's Talk About Ageism! Ageism refers to stereotypes (how we think), prejudice (how we feel), and discrimination (how we act) toward others or ourselves based on age. It negatively impacts our health and well-being, our financial security, and the economy. It exists in many forms, influencing everything from personal interactions to public policy, and impacts us at every age. The good news is that we can do something about it, and we begin by spreading the word on Ageism Awareness Day Oct. 9, 2024.

Language and images convey meaning, which feed assumptions and judgements that can lead to ageism. The way we frame communications also affects how people think, feel and act towards different age groups. This short guide, produced as a part of the Global Campaign to Combat Ageism, aims to help you improve your communication efforts by avoiding ageism in the messages and images you use. Take a look at the guide, talk about it with friends and family, share it with others. Be part of the "Aging Unbound" theme as we honor older Americans. https://loom.ly/OX2_N7I

#Ageism is not about any specific age. Simply, it is prejudice (how we feel), stereotyping (how we think), and discrimination (how we act), based on age. Any age. https://lnkd.in/ghrMjhjv I have personally walked through a door to a new stage many times in my own life to find the other side misaligned with my expectation, for better or for worse. I mean, my older brother told me you're basically a nobody until you hit double digits and being 10 years old didn't feel all that different TBH. Ageism comes at us from individuals and institutions, but it also comes at us from within ourselves. Research has shown that internalized ageism can literally reduce our lifespan: https://lnkd.in/g83cAnvB As Ashton Applewhite--a thought leader on ageism--says, in an #ageist culture, age is derogatory. It should be neutral. When we give ourselves up to negative expectations of getting older, we give up our agency and the possibility for creating a wonderful life at any age. Here's to more doors and the possibility of what lies on the other side. Cartoon by Sarah’s Scribbles: https://lnkd.in/gM_dKweH #innovation #agefriendly #agefriendlydesign #endageism #implicitbias

Consulting Partner - Equity, Diversity and Inclusion | Founder of the GoTitleFree? campaign (featured: BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour) | Gender Identity Equity | EDI Policy | Author | Speaker | Trainer | Blogger
Do you know which protected characteristic is discussed the least? Age discrimination is everywhere. There frankly just isn’t enough age positivity. When I’m facilitating EDI training, running focus groups and round tables, and speaking with employees at all levels, there is an undertone from many that the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion conversation is not relevant to them personally... because they don’t see themselves as ‘diverse’. However: ??? ‘Age’ is a protected characteristic too. (i.e. It’s unlawful to treat anybody unfavourably because of their age - whatever that age may be!). ?? ALL of us are vulnerable to judgement because of our age. ?? (If we’re lucky), we’re ALL going to get older… so the EDI conversation is relevant to everyone! A 2019 AARP study of online images found that: ?? Adults ages 50 and older are portrayed in a positive light… only 72% of the time ?? People ages 49 or younger were shown in a positive light… 96% of the time. Age positivity in the media is thankfully increasing... bit by bit! ?? TV - Shows like The Golden Bachelor and films like 80 for Brady portray older people in non-stereotypical ways. ?? Podcasts - Julia Louis Dreyfuss's podcast Wiser Than Me is an example of age-positive media. ?? Social media - Influencers like The Old Gays and Grandma Lilian Droniak use social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube to share their experiences and ideas without being influenced by big companies. Here are five things we can ALL do to make sure we are creating inclusive workplaces for all generations: ? Focus on types and depth of experience (instead of years of experience) when discussing colleagues and their contributions. ? Reflect on assumptions you make about age related dependency on others, life responsibilities, energy and physical ability, and hobbies and interests. ? Use positive language, and use specifics only when relevant: “Adults over 70” instead of “elderly”, “senior citizens”. ? Remember that life experience for one ‘Baby Boomer’, ‘Generation X’, ‘Millennial’, or ‘Generation Y’ person will vary HUGELY to the next person’s.? ? Call out age related assumptions, and if you ever get something wrong yourself, thank the person who’s pointed it out to you. Apologise. Reflect. Continue learning! We all get terminology wrong from time to time. We all have a tendency to assume. The difference is intent, and a willingness to keep learning for the benefit of ourselves and those around us. This TED talk by Ashton Applewhite will take 11 minutes of your life… and it’ll be worth it!: https://lnkd.in/gT9UyYC9 Happy Thursday everyone. Stella x P.S.
