Building Relationships that Go Beyond Business
When it comes to networking, it’s easy to focus on titles and transactions. But over the years, I’ve learned that the most impactful relationships are the ones that go deeper. It’s not just about what someone can do for you—but about building a connection rooted in trust, shared values, and genuine interest.
Here are a few ways I try to build relationships that go beyond business:
1?? Listen First – I focus on learning about the other person: their journey, challenges, and what excites them. Listening without a specific agenda shows people you’re there for more than just a quick exchange.
2?? Look for Shared Values – Finding common ground outside of work makes a relationship so much stronger. Whether it’s a shared cause, passion, or even a similar life experience, these connections become a foundation.
3?? Stay in Touch Beyond ‘Need’ – I like to reach out to people just to check in or celebrate their wins, even when I don’t need anything. Consistent, genuine engagement builds a relationship far better than waiting until you need something.
At the end of the day, strong relationships are about being invested in each other’s growth. I’ve found that these connections often lead to unexpected opportunities and, many times, real friendships.
How do you approach building deeper relationships in your network? Let’s exchange ideas in the comments!
