Visa, Mastercard, and China UnionPay Transaction Volumes 2023 Let's dive in: Card services tend to be imagined as a duopoly between Visa and Mastercard. However, founded in 2002, China’s UnionPay surpassed Mastercard by transaction volume in 2017. In 2023, UnionPay recorded 228 billion transactions globally, now firmly in second place behind Visa (267 billion). According to Retail Banking Research, it also surpassed both Visa and Mastercard in terms of overall payment value as well ?? UnionPay’s largest market is China, where it’s the only interbank network, linking all the ATMs. It’s also worth noting that the majority of UnionPay transactions are debit transactions, though its credit card products are growing fast. ? American Express cards are less popular due to higher merchant fees, limiting their acceptance. Sources: Statista & Visual Capitalist Find this helpful? Marcel van Oost Insightful! What's key point ?? China's Union Pay cards volume growth ?? is sudeen peek ?
This milestone is a testament to UnionPay's rapid growth and expanding footprint in the international market. Their achievement highlights the increasing global acceptance and adoption of their services, reflecting a robust and evolving payments landscape.
Add RUPAY to it and see the magic.. The decline would be even steeper...
Would be interesting if we segregate CUP (China Union Pay) domestic product in China, and UnionPay International the true comparison of international payment schemes based cards.
Very interesting to see how important is CUP scheme market share !!! The other key topic concerns Corporates who started challenging more and more payment commissions, especially vs Visa & MC. Not sure how concerned is CUP by this hot topic which become very sensitive for Retail companies by its significant financial impact... Thanks for this insight Marcel van Oost
