iOS18 has a new Wi-Fi feature that rotates a device's randomized Wi-Fi MAC address to further reduce tracking of devices when attached to an Open network. This feature is, by default, On in iOS network specific settings when a device connects to an Open Network. I have been testing this feature on two separate open captive portal networks, with the iOS18 feature active, and not once has the randomized MAC address, for either network, changed over a week's worth of testing. That includes switching the device off and on, and not attaching to the open network over a weekend, which could have been prompts for the device to change the MAC address. Is the new MAC rotation feature even active? Has Apple detuned it so users don't regularly get asked to sign up again, which is good in my world, but rather defeats the security update. Dear Apple, What kind of dark UI pattern is this? I blocked that publication specifically because of its clickbait sensationalist headlines. I blocked it, you acknowledge I blocked it, but you still try to shove its headlines into my Apple News feed. This is why I have cancelled my subscription. Sadly, Safari webviews will randomly break and refuse to display the page anymore in the middle of Google AMP formatted articles in the Google News app. But at least when I block a news source with them, it is actually blocked… and I can get a more reliable Google News experience by trading in my iPhone on an Android in a couple months. If iOS 18 doesn’t fix a few major glitches, I’ll be leaving the Apple ecosystem and just switch to Linux and Android (including paving my MBP with Linux for ARM once it gets stable enough to be a daily driver).
