I was sent this video by Mary Spender today by a friend (thanks Dave!). While UK centric, the serious issues she highlights that are facing grassroot music venues are just as applicable here in New Zealand: - Rising operating costs - The legacy of multiple lockdowns - Rent increases - Noise complaints The UK's Music Venues Trust reported 2023 was the "worst year for venue closures" with the loss of 125 grassroots spaces. Aotearoa has had its own share of closures in 2024, and I suspect more are still to come. As Mary points out, this is not just a question of whether those businesses were well managed and operated. There's a fundamental challenge with a business model that has to deliver a lot (far more than a traditional hospitality operation), with high operating costs, and a revenue model primarily dependent on alcohol sales. And if anyone is reading the tea leaves, drinking habits are changing. As health advice continues to evolve around the negative effects of alcohol, even small amounts, people are drinking less (and spending less) when they go out. Imo, this isn't just the cost-of-living crisis, there's a macro shift happening away from alcohol in the Gen Z generation, and that shift is only going to grow in years to come. A recommended watch for anyone interested in seeing a thriving music ecosystem here in Aotearoa. Timely too for me as I head into tomorrow morning's first session with the Auckland City of Music Music Advisory Board. This one is wearing my venue owner hat for Neck of the Woods. https://lnkd.in/gymXCznA Mark Roach Rob W.

We are seeing these issues from every corner of the globe with industry, governments, and citizens striving to find a realistic balance through new technologies. #noisecontrol #industrialnoisecontrol #urbannoise
Live Music Capital of the World's City Council passes the "They Were Here First" ordinance. Council passed an ordinance to address issues with live music venue late night sound production but different than most efforts puts the responsibility on new hotel and housing developers near venues to document the existing sound being produced to acknowledge they know what to expect. The ordinance apparently doesn't put any new requirements on sound coming from these venues or require them to install sound dampening materials because they were here first. Not clear what the developers are required to do with this audio data but glad to see council not making it more difficult to try and continue the self proclaimed Live Music Capital moniker. #austin #linkedglenn #livemusiccapital #musicwasherefirst P.S. Any developers needing some acoustical consulting reach out to LinkedGlenn friend Jack B Evans, he'll take care of you!

YWMP has been working on the Safer Spaces policy for quite some time, and we would love to hear from you about your experiences at live music venues. Have you ever had a less than positive night out? Perhaps you went to see a band play and the door person was aggressive when they checked your ticket, or maybe another patron approached you in a threatening way and the music venue staff didn’t react in an appropriate manner when you spoke to them about it. We probably all know someone who has been spiked. We want to hear about your experiences so that we can build a policy that will reflect them, and keep us safer when we’re having fun. Let’s disrupt the status quo of gig going culture together. Fill out the survey below, and read more about the Safer Spaces policy. https://lnkd.in/dVcmsg9c

How would YOU choose live music for YOUR event? Would YOU even know where to begin? Hmmm.... Well, let me share some of my tips, BUT I would love to hear what YOU think. Why don't YOU leave a comment! HOW to choose a live musician for your venue or event?? 1) Know what type of music you want, as in what genre: jazz, pop, rock, indie, big band, Motown, soul, Celidh, country, reggae, blues, Latin. Perhaps suggesting the names of favourite artists or bands will help with deciding what genre(s) to choose. 2) Know what sort of event the music will be for. What is the venue and do they have music guidelines and/or restrictions. What size band can the venue accommodate? 3) Listen to music of the band or artist being considered. Listen and/or watch on one of the popular streaming platforms. Or, try and go and see them perform live and know your budget. 4) Make a shortlist of possible musicians. Over to YOU - What would You do? #music #livemusic #events

A coalition of music groups have formed Music Votes. They will focus on three main areas: voter registration, ID laws, and turnout. What we love is that they are working with record stores and venues, places not always populated by voter information groups. It's an impressive coalition! They've brought in #iVoted, a group that focuses on music fan voter turnout to help identify specific artists for specific cities to help turn out the vote. There are environmental music groups like Reverb, the Hip Hop Caucus, and the Environmental Voter Project involved. #votingmatters #greenvotes

In addition to the unsatisfactory payment for artists, Universal Music Group also cites to the flood of AI-generated music on TikTok as the reason for the breakdown between the two companies. Is AI-generated music a sufficient substitute for human-generated music in TikTok videos? Send me your best examples!
