Building our community, states and country has happened over centuries. Like a wonderful historic building that has been neglected and needs help, some people think it's best to tear it down and build a new one. Others appreciate that old building and think of the people who built it, what life was like back then, dig in, learn how to fix it and then look for masons and carpenters and fix it. Leadership and the wisdom of elders has never been more important. There are leaders who think the "old building" of America needs to be kicked down, but they offer no masons or carpenters to rebuild it. Other leaders know it needs help, and are trying to find masons and carpenters to fix it, because it is too beautiful to tear down. This photo compilation from Oneida County came from a friend who happens to be a wolf biologist and friend. It represents what we once had and can have again. It really hammers home the opposite of all the strife and division we have experienced in our "historic building" since 2010. And coincidentally, elected officials have a brand new way to divide us involving wolves. These leaders who feel division and drama are the answer, that kicking the barn down as my farmer friends taught me the story, is the answer. Or do you agree with my farmer friends and me that we need masons and carpenters? As the lesson is taught, any Jack@ss can kick down a barn, but it takes masons and carpenters to rebuild it. And historically and now Jack@sses have never had those skills, and why this lesson from elders must not be forgotten. Going forward, I hope we all think of our young people. For the last 14 years since the 2010 elections, the political trauma and drama is all many of them know of the adult world. Many elders are letting them down. They deserve better. We need wise elders, masons and carpenters more than ever. Like the Grandparent's and elders we were blessed with in our young adult lives. Wise and kind, but carry a big stick if one is needed. Good things for most people can't happen when "Divide and Conquer" and "With Us or Against Us" is so strongly played by half of our elected leaders. It's time for changes for sure, but let's all work together, like a team. And that requires cooperation, and leaders who are smart, wise and genuinely care about their families, friends and neighbors. Like this Mom wolf. Wolves are animals and technically we are too. A wolf pack is like us too. They are generally a Mom, Dad and pups. Maybe an Aunt or Uncle, and possibly even Grandma or Grandpa. Let's one day soon, show our young people the state and United States us older folks were blessed to live, grow up and thrive in. Thank you if you read this far. It tells me you care. And those are the people who can fix this mess. Thank you.

Here at BRIC in Springfield, we're acutely and continuously aware of the myriad of challenges that rural life presents in the face of our community development efforts. If we're being honest, the list of obstacles and setbacks we encounter day to day often feels endless - like pushing a boulder up hill (both ways!) in the snow. Anyone boots on the ground doing this type of work knows it's not for the faint of heart, and in fact we often joke that you have to be a certain sort of glutton for punishment in order to ever actually make any progress. We know what we're doing is difficult, and that we're pushing against the odds with the things we're trying to accomplish - and somehow this awareness actually BOLSTERS our determination. The spirit of resilience and ingenuity is STRONG in Vermont. It's an inherent part of our identity. Whether it's snowstorms, early frosts, catastrophic flooding, workforce and housing shortages, food insecurity, busted leaking pipes - whatever the hurdle, Vermonters SHOW UP. We imagine possibilities, we work together, and we GET SHIT DONE. In spite of the challenges, there's nowhere we'd rather be!
