As Greater Seattle Partners launches our second annual SelectUSA Spin-off this week in King County, WA Pierce County, and Snohomish County, WA it’s good see companies attracted to the region from last year’s SelectUSA Spin-off like CHARGEPOLY grow in the region. As an Economic Developer, concrete outcomes growing jobs and investment is the target. Economic opportunity is the foundation for making life better for all in a region. Last week Chargepoly CEO Laurent GUYON and Chris Kang Perkins Coie LLP joined the global conversation with an EV company from #Taiwan visiting the #Seattle region. I want to thank my old friend and colleague?Marc Sharpe?for inviting me to the?intriguing Texas Family Office Association's 10th Annual Symposium Association at?the SMU Cox School of Business in Dallas. TFOA was founded by Marc more twenty years ago as a forum for ultra high-net worth families in the state to meet and discuss investment and business ideas, best practices, etc. The rise of family offices is a quiet but powerful phenomenon, and Texas has its fare number wealthy families. According to?DBS Bank?and?Economist Intelligence: EIU, there are more than 10,000 single-family offices (SFOs) and 5,000 multi-family offices (MFOs) worldwide, with more than $15 trillion?? in current wealth expected to be be passed on to next generations. Marc sets a high bar for his annual symposium: invitation only, Chatham House rules, very discreet (name badges only have first names), with “panels”?being fireside chats with a mix of important investment professionals. A nice mix of social events, with interesting sponsors including concierge travel, personal security, and - of course - private banking and all forms of wealth management. (because Stefano Beninteso and I had fun putting together the case studies). As a small business owner myself, I know how daunting it can be to navigate the legal landscape when every dollar counts. I can appreciate that it may not be practical or cost-effective to seek legal advice each time you enter into a business contract. That's why we are passionate about empowering business owners with the knowledge to try and independently navigate contracts to the best of their ability. I’m excited to see the Burnaby Board of Trade and BDC highlighting #SmallBusinessWeek and the importance of supporting local businesses. It’s a great reminder that we all benefit when small businesses thrive! Here are some best practices to follow when preparing and entering into contracts: ??. ???? ?????????? ?????? ???????????????? – Always outline the obligations, deadlines, and expectations of both parties in writing. ??. ???????????? ?????????????????????? ?????????????? – Understand how and when a contract can be ended, and what the consequences are. ??. ???????? ?????? ?????? ?????????? – Identify any ambiguous language or unfair terms, and don't hesitate to ask for revisions. ??. ???????????????? ??????????-???????? ?????????????????? – Think about what could go wrong in the agreement and make sure you’re protected. What happens if deadlines are missed, or someone doesn’t deliver? ??. ???????????????????? ???????????? ?????????????? – Include provisions that allow for adjustments if circumstances change, such as pricing, timelines, or the scope of work. ??. ???????????????? ???????????????????? – Keep records of negotiations and final agreements for future reference. ??. ???????? ???? ?????? ???? ???????????????? – Monitor automatic renewal clauses, and give notice if you do not wish to renew the contract. ??. ?????????????????????? ?????????????? ???????????????????? – Specify how disputes will be handle (i.e. mediation, arbitration, or litigation) to avoid costly legal battles. At the fourth M/10 Challenge event, Adam Weinstein of Phipps Houses and Melissa Román Burch of NYCEDC were invited to speak about housing and economic development in New York City. Melissa Román Burch is the Chief Operating Officer for the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC). She leads major economic development transactions, initiates tax incentive programs and investments that create jobs in key sectors, and spearheads real estate development on city-owned land.
