Expectations for a Med Device Sales Leader are high. To simplify those... here is what I shared with my leadership team... It's a best practice for a Sales Director to "introduce" their leadership team to the laws of the land. The things that need to be understood upfront and early.... perhaps mistakes of the past... that can be avoided all together. Some of these are passed down... because they work. Confidence: - Become a reader. The great leaders read. Bottom line. - Take care of yourself. Body, mind, spirit. - Study the best - Avoid gossip - Push negatives UP, positives DOWN - Mind the company that you keep Command: - Fiscal responsibility and accountability...protect the resources of the company and your team will follow. - Be a problem solver without compromising the financial health of the company - Know the numbers, spot trends, communicate progress - Clear forecasting and let that dictate your travel schedule to plug into key projects - Hire great talent. Hire great talent. This will be your legacy. - Hit your number. The best recruiting tool is winning. Communication: - Build, develop, maintain relationships with HQ - Mind readers are rare. Make sure you own your engagement and deliver absolute truthfulness. Leaders don't keep leaders guessing. - Understand the difference between good to know and NEED to know and keep sales leadership informed - People updates are typically NEED to know I'm so thankful to have received the coaching and development to even understand a list like this, let alone build a winning team around it. After touring NYC, Toronto, Chicago, & Boston in 2020, & spending time with sales leaders from top co's... That quote stuck with me the most. Why? It answers the q - "Is sales more art or science?" Ex-athletes are: - Stats & numbers-driven - Process-oriented - Competitive - Coachable - Gritty Liberal arts majors learn: - Strong written communication - Persuasive storytelling - Critical thinking - Active listening ...and have zero aversion to deep research. Tough decisions made easier, thanks to my old teacher Over the past 20+ years as a sales leader, creating and leading elite B2B sales teams, making tough decisions was part of the territory. Now I am coaching elite sales leaders all around the world, it is clear that many struggle with tough decision-making, succumbing to analysis paralysis or simply hoping for the best. The truth is I’ve always found it relatively easy to make decisions that make a change. But I can’t take the credit for that. The real credit goes to my old secondary school science teacher, Mr. Feeley. He changed many lives, including mine, with a simple mantra that has guided me through every tough decision. Today, I’d like to share it with you: Maximum effect, minimum effort. This principle isn’t just for sales leadership; it applies to all aspects of life. Ask yourself: What action can I take that will have the biggest impact with the least amount of effort over time? Here’s how you can apply it as sales leaders: Weighing up re-jigging territories? Think about which changes will bring the most benefit with the least disruption. Dealing with a toxic A Player? Consider the approach that will restore team harmony most efficiently. Renewal growth not what you were aiming for? Identify the most impactful and easy to apply adjustments to your strategy. Standards slipping? Find the simplest way to re-establish high performance. Made a poor hire? Determine the quickest path to either improve or replace the hire. Next time you face a tough decision, use the lens of ‘Maximum effect, minimum effort’.
