Excited to share that our paper, "Multivariate Analysis of Gut Microbiota Composition and Prevalence of Gastric Cancer", has been published in IEEE Xplore after being presented at the Advances in Science and Engineering Technology International Conferences (ASET), 2024! In this study, conducted with Dheeman Gangopadhyay under the guidance of Dr. Ayman Alzaatreh, we explore the role of gut microbiota as a predictive marker for gastric cancer—a disease with increasing global prevalence. By analyzing gut microbiome composition data from over 10,000 genera, we identified key bacterial genera potentially linked to gastric cancer. Through robust feature selection techniques, we narrowed the data down to 17 critical features and used machine learning models to evaluate their performance in predicting gastric cancer. This work demonstrates the model’s potential for early risk assessment and enhancing diagnostic accuracy. Our findings emphasize the vital role of microbiome-based biomarkers in gastric cancer risk assessment and highlight the effectiveness of machine learning models in identifying these key features. This work contributes to advancing predictive modeling in healthcare and offers valuable insights into the gut-cancer connection. ?? Read the full paper on IEEE Xplore:

For those of you not present for the Precision Medicine in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Summit, but interested in learning more about prognostic biomarkers for IBD, here is a link to register for the webinar with Towia! https://lnkd.in/eB2xXQFT
I am thrilled to share that I've been invited to speak at the upcoming 2nd Precision Medicine in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Summit, scheduled for March 21, 2024. During my presentation, titled "Leveraging Prognostic Biomarkers to Unravel the Mechanisms of IBD for Enhanced Disease Management," I will delve into the innovative use of serum protein biomarkers to gain deeper insights into the underlying mechanisms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and its phenotypes. Specifically, I will showcase our groundbreaking SomaScan proteomics data, which has been instrumental in identifying and defining key biomarkers associated with IBD. By elucidating these biomarkers, we aim to improve patient stratification and management strategies, ultimately paving the way for more personalized and effective treatments for individuals battling with IBD.

Congratulations to Drs. Natalie DuPré and Sandra Kavalukas, in collaboration with Dr. Lu Cai, who have received an Interdisciplinary Pilot Project Award from the CIEHS for their project entitled “Lifetime Environmental Exposure to Metal Carcinogens and Colorectal Cancer: A Clinical Case-Control Study”. This #pilotproject will directly measure known #environmental #metal #carcinogens in blood and urine in Louisville residents with colorectal cancer and without colorectal cancer from a colorectal cancer surgical clinic at UofL Health. It is unknown whether environmental metal carcinogens increase risk of #colorectalcancer. However, in prior work, we observed colorectal cancer hotspots within #Louisville and observed that higher exposure to ambient #arsenic and ambient #cadmium was associated with residing in these colorectal cancer hotspot neighborhoods. This pilot study will compare levels of environmental carcinogens in urine and blood samples of Louisvillians with colorectal cancer (i.e., “cases”) and without colorectal cancer (i.e., “controls”). It will provide necessary information to: 1) demonstrate our ability to develop a clinical case-control study in our community, and 2) compare levels of environmental carcinogens in patients with colorectal cancer and patients without colorectal cancer.
