Today we’re celebrating #NationalFoodDay ! Food is medicine, and at MANNA, we know that firsthand ?? MANNA first opened its doors in 1990 when 7 members of the First Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia began delivering meals to their neighbors dying of AIDS. In the over 34 years since our founding, MANNA has stayed true to its original mission of providing nourishment to our critically ill neighbors, and has since served over 23 million meals to clients across Philadelphia, the surrounding suburbs, and parts of South Jersey. Happy National Food Day everyone! ??

Food: Giving Thanks...to Whom? Growing up in an Irish Catholic household, our family grace was always, “Bless us, Oh Lord, for these gifts…” But as a mother to two thoughtful boys, I started to reflect on how that prayer felt out of place. I began to wonder what I truly wanted to instill in them about our relationship with food. Recognizing the Value of Food I want my boys to appreciate the significance of food. Many people don’t have the luxury of deciding what to eat for dinner or even if they’ll have dinner at all. I grew up hearing, “There are starving children in the world; finish your plate.” While that sentiment has faded, I want my boys to understand their privilege regarding food and to recognize that many struggle to access nourishing meals. I hope they will take action against food inequity whenever possible. Thank you for this food. Gratitude for Every Contributor It’s essential for my boys to express gratitude for every person involved in bringing food to our table. From farmers to truck drivers to grocery store employees, the list can be extensive! By reflecting on the countless individuals who contribute to the simple act of eating, they gain a deeper appreciation for each meal. As children, we explored this process in depth, and now that they are older, we acknowledge all who helped us receive this food. Thank you to everyone who made this meal possible. Awareness of Our Community I want my boys to recognize their connection to a larger community: a county, a country, a world. Our food choices can have ripple effects, influencing both people and the planet. It’s our responsibility to help others when they are in need and to make choices that are healthy for the Earth. May all eat well. Creating a world where everyone is nourished requires collective effort and awareness. It calls for moments of grace where we reflect on the bigger picture, fostering gratitude for what we have while motivating us to support others. Here’s our new grace as teenagers: “Thank you for this food. Thank you to everyone who helped bring it to us, and may all eat this well.” #gratitude #foodasmedicine #appreciatinglife #givingthanks

As the future leaders of our generation, all children need good, nutritious food to grow and function. Yet, many children in the Baltimore region are hungry when they arrive to school, and many have not eaten a full meal since they left school the day before. According to Feeding America, 33% of children in Baltimore city are food insecure. Our food assistance programs and conferences, work to ensure that all children can have access to the nutritious food they need to achieve their full potential. For too long, anti-hunger efforts have focused on scarcity, compliance, and worthiness. And it's not working; hunger rates continue to rise even as we pour increasing amounts of resources into the effort. I propose that it's time we change our approach by prioritizing abundance, support, and dignity. Subscribe to the Who Deserves to Eat blog to join the conversation! www.whodeservestoeat.com

Did you know nearly 7,000 children in Orange County, North Carolina are on free and reduced meals? That's 1 in 3 kids who can be considered food insecure. TABLE was founded in 2008 to help alleviate food insecurity among children living in Orange County by providing local kids with healthy, fresh food and nutrition education. We started serving 12 kids at one elementary school and have grown our programs to deliver food directly to the homes of 950 kids every week. Since 2008, TABLE has distributed over 2,880,000 healthy meals and snacks to local children. Through our food access and nutrition education programs, our goals are to improve children’s overall health; increase children’s knowledge of nutrition, positive attitudes toward healthy eating, and/or long-term healthy eating habits; ensure kids and families are engaged, involved, and feel dignified; and ensure kids have access to and eat sufficient nutritious food. Over the last year, TABLE has achieved some remarkable milestones including completing our Capital Campaign raising $3.25 million to purchase and renovate our new building, raising over $300k at our annual Empty Bowl Fundraiser - the most successful Empty Bowls ever, and moving into our new space where initially we will feed 1,000 kids with a goal to reach 3,000 children! As TABLE grows more everyday, TABLE is facing a challenge we have never seen in our history: a waitlist of over 300 kids and growing. We are living in a time where inflation is at its highest and it’s challenging to reach more donors. We need help now more than ever if we want to continue to give the children in our community healthy, sustainable lives. Please follow us to continue to learn more about us and ways you can help. https://tablenc.org #foodinsecurity #feedinglocalkids #orangecounty #helpingkids #nonprofit #tableinc #tablehistory

I live in Arlington, Virginia. It’s a place that's rich in diversity, food, and greenery. It’s also affected by food insecurity, with more than 23,000 people (nearly 10% of the population) not having access to enough food for an active, healthy life. These are just some of the eye-opening facts released this week as part of Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap Study (https://lnkd.in/ep7JimvB) —an annual, comprehensive view of how food insecurity varies across the U.S. As the only national study to provide county-level estimates of food insecurity and food costs, this study is a powerful tool for all of us to use to better understand hunger in our communities. It shows that food insecurity exists in every county, parish and congressional district in this nation, but it isn’t experienced equally. Food insecurity levels vary across regions, influenced by factors like unemployment and poverty rates as well as policies and practices rooted in history that continue to hold people back today. I encourage you to learn about the impact of hunger in your community. Spark conversations around the systemic factors that drive food insecurity then join the movement to end hunger (https://lnkd.in/enR6y7VC). Help us create a future where we all have access to the food and resources we need to thrive. #EndHunger

Being kind is essential to helping people experiencing hunger feel welcome in emergency food spaces, but genuine kindness can only grow from a foundation that believes that everyone deserves to eat, no matter what. Read more on the blog: https://lnkd.in/g42SAY2r
