Workshop and hiring announcement: Anthropie will be conducting a 6 and 1/2 day workshop at The Nudge in Bangalore, May 20th - 26th, 2024. The Building Empathy with Bias workshop is a unique, participatory methods training offered ONLY by Anthropie, and designed for anyone who encounters and wants to mitigate bias in their work - with respondents, students, users, trainees - whatever YOU envision as your community. If you work in research; project, service or product design or implementation, gender, philanthropy/funding, pedagogy and/or content creation, this is a great opportunity to go beyond social networking and actually get to know people from different walks of life. This time, there's a twist: at the end of the workshop week, Anthropie will be interview a select number of people to join our team later this year for a year-long ethnographic and design research project with WWF India, in Arunachal Pradesh. #Quickedit: The recruitment process for the Arunachal position is distinct from the workshop! Good opportunity

30 years back, if you graduate it was easier to get jobs. In fact, people who graduate were far less those days. Fast forward now, the ratio between students who graduate and the opportunities available is broadened drastically. A study says that of the 7635 Indian colleges, 60% provide lifescience degrees and every year 3+ lakhs graduate. Apart from these colleges, you have universities and premiere institutions like IITs, IISc, IISER and more. On the employers’ side, companies compete and struggle to bring in cash. The product or service industry whatever may be, has huge competition globally. And offline efforts do not suffice. You need online efforts as well. If you are a graduate and applying for jobs, keep in mind 1?? You are not alone in this struggle 2?? Invest in yourself. Upskill on your passion. See what you can bring to the table and be unique from other candidates 3?? Choose an area of interest as early as possible. Invest time, money and energy on it. 4?? Networking is key. Start early. Work on LinkedIn at least an hour a day. Follow and engage with peers. Interact with them Getting hired is tough but not impossible. With such a prestigious environment, many wonder why I didn’t opt for the science stream. Here’s why: ? My parents gave me the freedom to choose my path, as long as I committed to excelling in it. I chose commerce, and now I’m thriving at #LSR. That autonomy was a key factor in my decision. ? Being surrounded by the intense competition at #IITK, I realized that success in science and engineering doesn’t always guarantee a clear career path or personal fulfillment. ? While science and engineering are incredible fields with vast opportunities, commerce and humanities offer their own unique benefits. I chose #commerce to explore business and trade, and it has been incredibly rewarding. Humanities also provide valuable perspectives on culture and society. ? Following my passion for commerce has opened new doors and brought me a sense of fulfillment. It’s crucial to pursue what excites you, whether that’s in science, commerce, or humanities. ? The recent data obtained through RTI has shed light on the concerning job placement situation at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) for the academic year 2024. Here are the key points to consider:?????????????? ?????????????????? ???????????????? ????????????????:?Approximately 38% of IIT students across 23 campuses, totaling around 8,000 individuals, are still seeking employment despite registering for placements. This represents a significant increase compared to previous years. ?????? ?????????????????? ??????????????:Out of the 21,500 students who registered for placements, only 13,410 have secured jobs, leaving a substantial number of students without any placement prospects. ???????????? ???????????? ????????????:The job crisis has impacted the mental health of students, with a heartbreaking six reported suicides among IIT students this year, underscoring the severity of the situation. ?????????? ?????? ???????????? ???????????? ??????????????:?IITs are reaching out to their alumni networks to assist in placing current students or recommending them to companies facing a shortage of engineering talent. ???? ????????????????.... So JEE-Mains paper-2 results are out and obviously some of you did exceptionally well, while many failed in doing so (It's obvious and we all know the success rate). And now one thing which most of you will come to hear is that "?????????????? ??????'?? ????????????, ???????? ???????????? ????????". Don't fall for this line and let me tell you why. Two different college, ???????? ?????????????????? and ?????????????????? ?????????????? ???? ?????????????????????? are located in the same campus. Both these college share same boundary wall. But the Highest Package of ???????? ?????????????????? is 89LPA and on the other hand, Highest Package of ?????????????????? ?????????????? ???? ?????????????????????? is 6-7 LPA (Some sales company) and even the Average Package of ???????? ?????????????????? is 17.3 LPA while Average Package of ?????????????????? ?????????????? ???? ?????????????????????? is ~2.5LPA. ?????? ?????? ???????? ???????????? ??????????? Is it because of skill? No! There are skilled student in BCE Bhagalpur too, but unfortunately, they can't showcase their skills to any tech company because they don't visit them. So think twice before joining any college. Get an in-depth knowledge of everything about the environment of college, placements and all. If you are opting for some not-so good college, make sure they don't have strict policies regarding 75% attendance criteria. Do a research on all of this because you might have to regret for 4 years if you won't.

Lack of Career Guidance Many students lack awareness of the diverse career options available with a science degree. Schools and colleges often do not provide adequate career counseling or mentorship. 6. Preference for Engineering or Technical Skills Employers in many sectors prefer candidates with engineering, IT, or vocational training backgrounds over pure science graduates. This is especially true in the booming tech sector, where coding and technical expertise are more in demand. 7. Geographical Disparities Job opportunities are often concentrated in urban areas, while students from rural or semi-urban areas may lack access to these hubs. Relocating to cities can be financially and socially challenging. 8. What could I have done to save me from feeling worthless and anxious after getting PhD degree in my hand with no job: 1. Started to network atleast in my 3rd year if not from the very beginning with people who were working after getting their PhDs. I knew quite a few, but my fault was I never reached out to them. 2. I could have looked up at the eligibility criteria for jobs while I was doing my PhD and should have gained the required expertise during the course of my PhD. 3. While I was applying for postdoc, I should have continued my search and applied in even better labs in other countries. That is I should have had Plan B and Plan C in place. 4. I should have been active on LinkedIn from the very beginning and built a network of like minded people, connected with the alumni of University of Hyderabad, showcase my skillsets, and curated my profile to increase my visibility among recruiters. 5. Last but not the least, should have made the maximum use of my visits to National and International conferences rather than just considering those as an opportunity to go on a trip to another place and enjoying free food!
