A challenging tight site optimised to maximise density. Whist Phase 1 took an existing planning consent not optimised for modular which we worked tirelessly with DMDmodular to make work, Phase 2 became a masterclass, optimised to reap the benefits of offsite volumetric modular construction. You wouldn't know to look at it, which shows how this approach can really work in inner city constrained sites in the face of record high construction costs.

The project has continued to make great progress in May, as the first phase of steel construction approaches completion. We anticipate the second phase to commence shortly, and once complete, we should then see the true size of this amazing Manchester landmark. ?? An upside of post-pandemic teaching is the opportunity to bring in expertise from all over Australia for our tutorials. Last night two esteemed colleagues at CSIRO: Guy Barnett and Tim Muster joined us for a class in Strategic Planning as part of the [Master of Urban Planning and Environment](https://lnkd.in/gpG_Up5G) to describe how their work on [Living Labs](https://lnkd.in/gbpm23Ck) is transforming Darwin, Canberra and Western Sydney. A key question to consider when dealing with wicked problems and the complexity of cities is to what extent is experimentation needed (and to what extent can Living Labs deliver these)? https://lnkd.in/gZ-aBPqp

One of the more recent student projects at the HS Bochum, MIKADO offers an innovative solution to the pressing need for temporary, flexible, and cost-effective building methods. Utilizing reused scaffolding and modular living units, this sustainable structure addresses transient needs and supports seamless transitions between locations. Located in Molenbeek, Belgium, a district facing a severe social housing crisis, MIKADO responds to the urgent demand for affordable housing. While social housing is crucial for urban development and social mobility, MIKADO demonstrates that it need not be permanent. As communities evolve, residents may seek more prestigious architectural landmarks in their neighborhoods. MIKADO facilitates this transition without the resource-intensive construction and demolition associated with traditional social housing projects. By offering a flexible, adaptable, and environmentally conscious alternative, MIKADO meets immediate community needs while promoting sustainable urban development. https://lnkd.in/eykxduPY
