Today, we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a visionary who dreamed of a world where justice, equality, and opportunity were within reach for all. Dr. King once said, “We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny.” Housing is one of the most fundamental threads in that garment. Access to affordable housing is a cornerstone of economic and racial justice. It strengthens communities, opens doors to opportunity, and provides the stability families need to thrive. Dr. King’s fight for civil rights included advocating for fair housing and dismantling discriminatory policies that kept many Black and Brown families from owning homes or living in safe, stable neighborhoods. Since 1992, over the course of many changes in markets and administration, Homestead Community Land Trust has carried this torch forward by working to ensure that homeownership is accessible to modest-income families, building pathways to generational wealth and stronger, more equitable communities. We’re going to keep doing that.
