Engaging the Next Generation in Community Leadership Hey LinkedIn Community! Let’s talk about something close to the heart: engaging the next generation to take leadership roles within their ethnic communities. Our grandparents often grew up in environments where questioning authority wasn't the norm. This nurtured a deep bond to their community, something our parents grew up immersed in. It was part of their lives and beliefs. Fast forward to today, and the younger generation, now in their 20s to 40s, grew up in more open households. They were encouraged to ask questions, doubt, and research. They might not agree with the previous generations and may have a different view of their community. Some might not want to be identified solely by their heritage. To keep our communities heritage alive and respected, we need to engage this younger generation. We need to understand their needs and vision and create a safe and inclusive space for discussion. We must accept that they are not us, just like we are not our parents. Times change, environments change, and we need to adapt so we don't lose them or create animosity toward their heritage. Let's embrace change with a smile and a willingness to listen. After all, the only constant in life is change! 2025 is here, and I am more driven than ever to leave a lasting impact. Last year, I worked with Satara Initiative on a school outreach program, where 30+ students benefitted from resources and guidance that helped shape their leadership and academic journey. This experience reaffirmed my belief that small, consistent actions lead to big transformations. It inspires me to take even bolder steps in 2025. This year, I am focused on: ?? Empowering youth with skills to lead confidently and embrace opportunities. ?? Driving community projects that create sustainable change and foster collaboration. ?? Building impactful partnerships with like-minded individuals and organizations to amplify results. ?? Publishing articles to inspire, educate, and spark meaningful conversations. ?? Engaging in continuous learning through fellowships and programs that support growth and innovation. Unlocking Potential: The Challenge of Finding Mentees for Auntie's Love At Auntie's Love, we believe every young girl deserves guidance, support, and an opportunity to reach her full potential. Our dedicated mentors are ready and waiting to share their wisdom, skills, and love with the next generation of leaders. However, I'm facing a daunting challenge—securing enough mentees to benefit from our transformative programs. A Founder’s Vision and Struggle I have poured my heart and soul into creating a safe, nurturing environment where adolescent girls can thrive. Despite this unwavering dedication, the road to connecting with those who need us most has been anything but smooth. Countless young girls could benefit immensely from a positive role model, but reaching them has proven to be a significant hurdle. Why is this happening? It’s a complex issue. Many families are unaware of the available resources, or they may hesitate to engage due to past experiences or mistrust. Others might be overwhelmed with daily struggles, making it difficult to even think about seeking out mentorship opportunities. In the spring of 2021 we held pilot meetings in the Northeastern region of Minnesota. Soon after, in the summer of 2021 through the spring of 2022, we traveled (virtually) across rural Minnesota region by region. Then, in early fall we held meetings in the metro counties and areas. These convenings created connections with women, strategies to better support each other, explored existing formal and informal networks, and identified barriers and opportunities to overcome. Two topics that were especially discussed were woman leadership and the importance of mentorship. Additionally, in light of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, we discussed the challenges of COVID and what positives we can take forward. Our goal was to ignite action in community, leadership, civic engagement, and rural entrepreneurship, while simultaneously identifying opportunities and connecting women with each other.
