MALARIA VACCINE: new #data published in The Lancet #Feasibility, #safety, and #impact of the RTS,S/AS01E #malaria #vaccine when implemented through #national #immunisation #programmes: evaluation of cluster-randomised introduction of the vaccine in #Ghana, #Kenya, and #Malawi There were an estimated 247 million malaria cases and 619 000 malaria #deaths worldwide in 2021; the vast majority occurred in young #children in sub-Saharan Africa. World Health Organization estimates of key indicators of global malaria burden have not improved since 2015, attributed in part to rising #insecticide #resistance, humanitarian #crises, and other #health system #challenges. In areas with #high malaria #burden, #transmission is so intense that children are still at appreciable #risk even when using all recommended #interventions. Therefore, additional malaria #control #tools are urgently needed. All together! I have been interested in the progress of anti-malaria therapeutics and vaccines for a long time. My PhD project was to try and structurally characterise a malaria vaccine target... and try as I might, I was unsuccessful. Luckily, there are better scientists than me around! I would highly recommend the documentary - Horizon: The Battle to Beat Malaria - (hopefully still) available on iplayer that tells the story of R21 vaccine.
In this article, Appleyard Lees Senior Associate and Patent Attorney, Sarah Gibbs explores how the launch of two recently developed malaria vaccines, RTS,S and R21, marks a critical milestone in combating malaria. Sarah explores how integrating these vaccines with existing control measures in Africa sets out a promising path towards near-eradication of malaria. Africa’s first malaria vaccine, RTS,S/AS01 is set to change this however following successful pilots in Ghana, Kenya and Malawi, with a total of 12 countries now beginning to receive supplies. Our latest position paper delves in the rollout and impact of the groundbreaking vaccine: https://lnkd.in/dMg8Bfhg #Africa #MalariaVaccine #EndMalaria #ConnectingAfricasPotential

Since the integration of the @WHO recommended Malaria vaccine into routine childhood immunizations, 982,743 children have received all the 4 doses for maximum protection. With 70% of Kenya's population, especially those in high malaria burden counties, at risk for malaria, the introduction of the malaria vaccine in 2019 has been pivotal. Alongside other malaria control interventions, hospitalizations for children under age 5 for severe malaria have drastically declined, leading to a reduction in child deaths in high-risk regions. Programs like this continue to demonstrate that #VaccinesSaveLives. Together, we can work towards the total eradication of malaria. #VaccinateToProtect
