A story is personal and not just a summary of the technical narrative or quals stated later in the proposal. How do YOU connect to your win themes? ??Beginning your cover letter with a story (aka anecdotal lead) establishes a magnetic connection between you and the reviewer. ??Hello, separating yourself out from the pack. ??That can lead to your understanding of the project (or potential projects for an on-call) followed by your unique approach and win themes. ??Make sure to start your cover letter off with a hook that grabs attention. The Cover Letter Conundrum ?? Cover letters are weird. I never know how much to include, how personal to get while still keeping it professional, or how to strike the right balance. And it seems like the "right" approach changes depending on the industry you're in. When I read advice online, I’m often left wondering if it even applies to me. The most frustrating part? After pouring time into writing, tailoring, and editing what essentially feels like a mini essay about myself, there’s a good chance no one will actually read it. All that effort for a maybe.
