After dropping off winter items to an OKC public school collected by the Oklahoma Council on Economic Education's board of directors last week, I was asked by my own child's school to take their lost & found items from last semester to Goodwill. But I had a better idea and asked if I could donate those items to that OKCPS school. After washing and organizing those items, I counted 15 sweatshirts, 17 jackets, 2 coats, 9 winter hats, 6 gloves, and the list goes on. Most of these items were gently used, name brand items and each went to good homes or the clothes closet of that school yesterday! This got me thinking. Rather than simply donating unclaimed items from schools to places like Goodwill and the Salvation Army, why don't we first reach out to our Title 1 schools? We can easily stock their clothes closets with the nice clothes left behind at other schools. Can you imagine every school having a stocked clothes closet for their students in need?! Moral behind this share: Not only can you help in drives like Oklahoma City Public Schools Foundation's Coat-a-Kid, but you can help by donating that barely used coat or shoes your child grew out of to a school who has a child in need of that exact size. In every community there are students and families who need our help, and helping is easier than you think! Most of the time, there are warning signs. We might not want to admit it, but most of the time, they are there. Most of the time, it is a scary situation, how a person will react if you ask them about it, what will you do if they admit to being in a bad place. Other times we just don't want to get involved, we have to much on our own plate. But my lesson, that I share with you today is: If you care about them, be courageous enough to ask, be willing to listen, and learn about the resources available to both of you. As a trial attorney, you learn to recite facts in a compelling manner. In doing so, you learn that truth is often stranger than fiction. So let me tell you a story... I left my decade-long career as a prosecutor to join The National Child Protection Task Force full-time in 2021. I had no apprehension. It was a leap of faith in a dedicated group of individuals who were focused on saving #justonemore child from exploitation. However, I had one regret: not being able to directly support my community the way I did as an ADA. I missed that direct impact I was able to give survivors and their families. Then I received an email earlier this year from an officer we trained in New York. That officer was thanking us. He told us about a young girl who went missing - presumably a runaway - in his jurisdiction. However, based on our training he knew something didn't add up. Utilizing techniques NCPTF taught him, they located the girl with a man twice her age who had groomed her via a video game platform. Between our training and their ceaseless work, they were able to recover the girl in 24 hours even though the defendant took her out of state. The defendant brought her to my home county in Pennsylvania. He's being prosecuted by my former office. NCPTF strives to serve all law enforcement and strengthen their ability to recover missing and exploited children. The more we are able to train officers, to assist them in their times of need, the wider the our impact. It's the butterfly effect in action.
