Today, we celebrate the birthday of one of the greatest icons of our time—Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter. Jay-Z's story is the ultimate blueprint for turning perseverance, unmatched ambition, and dedication to craft into a legacy that transcends industries. From Brooklyn's Marcy Projects to billionaire entrepreneur, his journey is a masterclass in meeting challenges head-on and creating opportunities where none existed. When no record label would sign him, he founded Roc-A-Fella Records. When the fashion world wouldn't open its doors, he launched Rocawear. And when the NFL wasn't giving minorities equal representation, he didn't just call them out—he partnered with them to change it. It is so important to celebrate. Especially celebrating YOU. It is easy to recognise and celebrate others. However the idea of celebrating ourselves seems to be covered in a veil of arrogance, big headedness. Why is that? Why have we been educated to see everyone else as more important than ourselves? Where are we taught to see our own value, to celebrate ourselves? Celebration is an acknowledgement of your achievements, your resilience, your learning, your trying. Celebration encourages you to keep going. So celebrate all your achievements big and small. Celebrate turning up for work, being there for others, celebrate recognising you and paying attention to how you are doing. HIP-HOP IS WHITE-OWNED Hip-hop started life in impoverished Black immigrant communities in New York in the ‘70s - and has become a global phenomenon worth billions. Yet as Boyce Watkins - who promotes financial empowerment among Black people - points out here, most of those profits aren’t going into Black pockets: the biggest record labels - Warner, Universal, Sony - are White-owned. He says it’s a similar story with Hollywood, where a film hailed as a milestone for Black representation on the silver screen - Black Panther - is enriching White execs the most. The Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute and the Central District Forum for Arts & Ideas (CD Forum) recently celebrated the culmination of their Creative Empowerment Program (CEP). This innovative program paired six mentors with six mentees, providing resources, guidance, and a platform to showcase their work. Additionally, the initiative awarded $30,000 in grants to 30 Black artists and creatives. The CEP, rooted in community and artist development, offered workshops covering wellness, business fundamentals, marketing, and financial literacy. The program aimed to equip participants with essential skills for success while fostering a sense of well-being and abundance.
