Rising health care costs are creating real challenges for many of the nearly 40 million midlife adults with employer-sponsored insurance, as detailed in a new post from the AARP Public Policy Institute. Policymakers and employers should recognize that these rising costs impact the affordability of, and access to, health care for this group of workers (ages 50-64) and find ways to ensure they can maintain affordable health coverage and access the care they need. #Affordability #HealthInsurance https://lnkd.in/eCAnnNHX

In part one of this two-part Breaking Down Health Care conversation, John Hennessy, MBA, and Michael Kolodziej, MD, dig into two of the main stakeholders in health care costs: hospitals and health insurance companies. They discuss how these entities contribute to the current high costs of care in the US and how they can help control those costs for patients. "When a hospital buys physician practices or an insurance company buys doctors’ practices, or hospitals or surgicenters or pharmacy benefit managers, we call that vertical integration... Now, that has become the major issue with ultimately what will happen with health insurance companies... So, it gets to be kind of an unholy alliance between the health plans and the physicians and the pharmacies and all that other stuff solely for the purpose of making more money. The government should start looking at these things like utilities or the banking industry and start putting in some real safeguards to protect consumers," said Dr Kolodziej. "Employers are shelling out?the equivalent of buying an economy car?for every worker every year to pay for family coverage," KFF president and CEO Drew Altman. The average annual health insurance premiums for family coverage in 2024 is more than $25,000. The average employee cost sharing for family coverage is roughly $6,300 per year. For a high-deductible plan, your minimum family annual deductible is $3,300 but the reality for most families is that the annual deductible can be up to $6,000. That can mean that you pay over $6,000 per year in premiums to earn the privilege of also paying up to $6,000 per year out of your pocket for your healthcare expenses before your health insurance benefits cover dollar one. And then when coverage does kick in, you’ll still have copays or coinsurance payments on many (most?) healthcare costs. Think this can’t get worse? The prediction is an 8% cost increase for 2025 in the group market. You would think that, eventually, something has to give on a macro level. Many larger companies are self-insured for healthcare costs but most of them hire third-party administrators to manage their claims and many of the larger TPAs are owned by the larger health insurance companies so there’s no escaping their hands in the till. #healthinsurance #healthcare #deductibles #premiums #healthcarereinvention
