Urban planning policies based on measurement, mathematical correlation, evaluation, and a growing foundation of conclusions based on a new language of objective comparison is the only way I have been able to envision meeting emotional, subjective, and self-interested opinion with the reason, logic, and consistent mathematical evaluation associated with more rigorous, scientific language, discussion, and conclusion. Substituting emotion for reason has never led us toward the knowledge required to improve.

THE STORY BEHIND THE PUBLICATION At some point during my academic career (say some ten years ago) I realized I wasn't too satisfied with keeping staring into the mirror, just watching the size of my H-index growing (and comparing it with that of colleagues), I wanted something more from my research: we too frequently complain and wonder what society can do for us, now it was time to start giving back. Perhaps this paper isn't published in a top-class journal and won't receive hundreds of citations, but...working on it and seeing it published made me happier than most of my other papers, as it really tries to solve something real. If you ever travelled through African roads, you sure have noticed how bumpy they can be, because of the clayey road substrates. Will we contribute to improving road transport in Africa? Time will tell... There's also something else that makes me happy about this one paper: half of the authors are first-year PhD students, all having a primary role in the study, I'm proud I could have a little role in the development of your careers Loyford Muchui Mugambi, Sandra Mujombi, Victor Mutai, a heartfelt good luck, wishing the road to your doctorates won't be as bumpy ??

?? Excited to share my dissertation on a detailed water balance study of the University of Surrey's campus! Through meticulous research, we've explored the hydrological dynamics of urban catchments using the Storm Water Management Model and the Curve Number method. ?? Key Discoveries: - 64% of the campus shows moderate to low infiltration rates, indicating a vital area for sustainable water management practices. - Intriguing negative water balance in 6 out of 14 months analyzed, hinting at potential areas for further investigation in irrigation practices, measurement errors, or systemic leaks. This work not only highlights the critical role of accurate hydrological modeling in urban planning but also sets a precedent for future studies in similar environments. Special thanks to my supervisor, Dr. Belen Marti-Cardona, for her invaluable guidance, and to all faculty, peers, and family for their unwavering support. As we move forward, let's consider the implications of such studies in enhancing our understanding and management of urban water resources. #WaterBalance #Hydrology #UrbanCatchment #SustainableEngineering #EnvironmentalEngineering #UniversityOfSurrey
