?? Is your neighbourhood a circular economy? Can reuse reclaim your neighbourhood? How can you best invest in community and the environment? What does sustainability mean to you? What is a circular economy & what does it have to do with my life? To make seismic change in our world, we all know that it’s vital to come together to answer critical questions like these and see the world through other people’s eyes. There is a real opportunity for change out there, we all feel it, but we need to break through various barriers to collectively actualise them in our immediate surroundings & avoid a future of ‘more of the same.’ That’s why we working with ReSpace Projects to put together this ? day conference as part of ReLondon’s #CircularEconomyWeek 2024 at The Loop in Hackney Wick. We’ve joined the Future Homes Hub, as part of our commitment to sustainability. Working in partnership on the climate and environment plan for new homes ?? The Hub brings together all those involved in home building to achieve the climate and environment goals for the sector in line with the Government’s legally binding net zero and wider environmental targets ?? The scale and speed of change is significant, and the new homes sector has set out its ambition in the delivery plan. Members of the Hub are working together on a broad range of topics, including the Future Homes Standard, embodied and whole life carbon, zero carbon placemaking, biodiversity net gain, water efficiency, resource efficiency and air quality. Ed Lockhart, CEO of The Future Homes Hub said: “New homes are undergoing rapid change to be ready for the climate and environmental challenges of the 21st century. No area of the economy is moving faster in this transition than the homes we build; the new homes sector will be nature positive through biodiversity net gain in 2023 and will be zero-carbon in operation through the Future Homes Standard in 2025. We have a collective responsibility to deliver the sector’s climate and environmental targets while building higher quality homes at the scale needed. We can only do this if we all work together. Either affordable housing or sustainable housing? We would like to position the Community Land Trust as an approach that could marry both: 1. by aligning short term interests (affordable housing) and long term (sustainability) and overcoming the split incentive so often present in conventional real estate development; 2. by promoting collective and circular solutions otherwise not available or applicable (because there is no 'collective' in conventional housing) 3. by on-boarding people into more sustainable lifestyles and building capacity for collective self-governance around green spaces, food production, waste management, mobility, maintenance, and other topics.
