There is a real urgency to provide a more nuanced understanding of how the criminal legal system operates and how it impacts health. In particular, it is crucial that healthcare workers begin to form an analysis of how these systems exacerbate health disparities and further marginalize many of the most vulnerable patients. It is encouraging to see the level of engagement, as I see healthcare workers as uniquely positioned to help shift us away from carceral centric narratives/policy. To end 2024, along with Janhavi Dubhashi, I published one last piece on the impact local jails have on patients. A scarcity of resources, opportunity, and care infrastructure too often define their pre-incarceration lives...a jail is not a social service provider, and we should reckon with the fact we spend an ever-growing amount on punishment, while many of our patients' basics needs go unmet."
