Before you schedule that Juneteenth post, let’s have a chat. I read a post recently that made me brush off my Twitter fingers. OP asked, “What would the caption for a Juneteenth post say? We don’t post promos/sales and it doesn’t connect with our business. Our headquarters and franchise owners are very white.” … Hello? *Please see gif for my reaction* I won’t address everything wrong with OP’s statements. But, I will say, as a DEI aware content strategist and community manager, it stuns me to see brands constantly miss the mark. Holidays centering Black American history and culture are printed on every calendar, yet the lack of training, and let’s be honest, the lack of care, would suggest DEI is a brand new concept. If you’re struggling to breach DEI topics externally, it’s most likely indicative of an absence of DEI initiatives internally. Hire a DEI consultant and content strategist. Don’t expect free labor. That being said, here are 2 hints: Don’t check a box. We can smell disingenuity from a mile away. Instead of posting, focus on your internal DEI initiatives. Don’t post product-centered content. Juneteenth is not a marketing opportunity. Oh, and last thing - if a federal holiday celebrating American freedom doesn’t “connect” with your business, we’d better not see any 4th of July posts.

FREE VIDEO WALK-THROUGH: How we grew The Black Stuff's sales from $40k months to $100k+ months (And expanded from Ireland to the UK!) Brand's get stuck at $20k-$40k months: → They aren't sure how to break past it → They don't know what's actually not working → They feel directionless and need some straight-forward guidance Oftentimes, brand's try agencies too early and get burned in the process. So, I'm trying to put more content together on what we do to help fix these problem-areas. It's taken years of testing and millions of $ in spend. And now we're able to help brands with clear direction. Once they hear our approach, it clicks that what they've been trying isn't a long-term solution to growth. So between creating more content and working with more brands, I'm hoping I can help more businesses grow this year than we've ever helped before. And the first case study I'm sharing here is free and gives the exact strategy we used. You get: → The problems that persisted → Our Audit and what we found (relatable bottlenecks) → How we successfully scaled to a new country (strategy) → The results ?? _____________ ?? There aren’t enough black and brown people in the marketing world. Of all my years of working in the corporate world, often I’ve been the only black guy working on the project. I’ve mentored so many people and often they are discouraged by this. So I want to write this for those of you that need to hear it. Your skin color: - Doesn’t have to dictate the opportunities available to you - Doesn’t have to prevent you from receiving that raise - Doesn’t have to stop you from achieving your monetary goals As long as that narrative is painted in your mind, it will become your reality. Your perspective on life is what dictates your success. I do not say this to be insensitive. I say this as a black man who had no connections, didn’t go to school for marketing, had all the markers that the statistics list of the typical black man who should be dead or in jail by 25. Instead, I went from being a security guard to being a digital marketer. Mind over matter, even when things are getting tough. If you’re trying to get your start in digital marketing, my inbox is open to any questions you might have! #digitalmarketing

We often think about DEI work in relation to larger scale issues, but “doing the work” is smaller than that. It’s about finding the intersections of the change you wish to see in the world and the spaces and communities you function in. If you’re a social media marketer in this case, that might look like… ?? being vocal online about the appropriation you see and calling it what it is like Jada S. ???? ?? being vocal in the office when your boss suggests hopping on this trend (“do we really need to hop on this trend?” is a question we could all stand to ask a bit more imho) ?? turning the trend on its head by putting a twist on it that calls attention to the fact that we’re all appropriating Black culture by calling it Gen Z slang The impact might be bigger than you think! ????
As funny as the "Gen Z Marketing" brand slang videos are, its also hard to watch Black slang get conflated as Gen Z slang when it really isn't. There needs to be a larger conversation around this and we need to stop mixing the two. A lot of these slang terms have been around the black community for decades and yet this community doesn't get the credit for driving these popular terms. As marketers, its our job to do the work to make sure the source is accurate and the correct credit is given.

Black Season is almost here – time to connect, captivate, and convert! Just like every year, it’s all about putting your audience first. With everyone throwing deals and promos out there, the brands that win big are the ones that get personal. Put yourself in the shoes of your target audience: It’s Personal ?? – Know what your audience loves and speak directly to them! When your content taps into what really matters to your customers, it doesn’t just sell – it creates a connection. Trust = Loyalty ?? – Show them you’re here to make their life easier, not just to sell. Helpful holiday guides, quick tips, and genuine advice go a long way in building trust that sticks around past the New Year. Stand Out ?? – Everyone’s competing for attention, but a user-focused approach is your secret weapon! When you talk to their real needs, your brand becomes memorable – not just another promo in the feed. 2024 isn’t wrapped up just yet, especially with so many exciting initiatives energizing our daily work. But here at K&C, we already want to say a huge thank you ?? to our amazing clients for the creative challenges we’re thrilled to be part of. May the final months of this year bring you success, growth, and good vibes. Let’s finish strong and roll into the new year with a bang! ??

From one LinkedIn comment, I found what I like to call my “marketing girlies.” ?????????? Our tribe came together most unexpectedly, all starting with one LinkedIn post. I shared my experience at Ragan Communications and PR Daily’s social media conference, and Jada S. engaged in the comments. I noticed she worked in social media marketing, lived in Orlando, and looked like me. ?? We decided to meet up for lunch, and that was it—we instantly clicked. Our conversation flowed effortlessly, covering marketing, life, and everything in between. I would say we became friends at that moment, but Jada didn’t officially accept my friendship until I became her LinkedIn connection. ?? You see, Jada had connected with me months prior, after my viral Barbie post, but I missed seeing it. ????♀? Then Jada introduced me to THEE Morgan Cox. After a virtual call with Morgan, I knew we had to keep this connection going. the energy was magnetic through our screens, and that’s how our “official” group chat was born. ?? Y’all, this is one of my most active group chats. We talk marketing, social media trends, and—most importantly—life. It’s a safe space where we encourage each other, share resources, and lift each other up in an industry that often feels isolating as a black woman. A few months ago we met up in person and filmed content (because obviously…) and enjoyed amazing food. In a field where only 7% of people look like you, finding those who understand your journey is invaluable. I’m incredibly grateful to LinkedIn for helping me foster these friendships. It proves your tribe is out there, even in the most unexpected places. To anyone feeling alone in the space you’re in; your tribe is out there, waiting for you. Keep connecting, keep growing, and never hesitate to reach out. Happy Black Marketers Day to all my Black marketers and especially to my marketing girlies! #BlackMarketersDay #BrandMarketer #SocialMediaManager #MarketingTribe #FindYourPeople #Grateful
