As we delve into the rich tapestry of Canadian Black History, let's illuminate the extraordinary Harriet Tubman — an example of courage and compassion. Her legacy extends far beyond the historical confines — it's a testament to unparalleled leadership that transcended borders and reshaped narratives. ?? Tubman's Canadian Legacy: Often referred to as the "Black Moses", Tubman stands tall in the history of the Underground Railroad. With unwavering courage, she led countless individuals through perilous journeys to find safety and freedom in Canada, actively participating in the fight to abolish slavery. ? Remarkable Achievements: Tubman's missions were not just daring; they were remarkably successful. Evading capture on every occasion, she made at least 10 trips and safely transported around 70 individuals, including her own family members, to freedom in Canada. Never captured, never losing a passenger—Tubman's resilience stands as a hallmark of leadership. In the face of obstacles, setbacks and danger, her unwavering determination demonstrates that resilient leadership is pivotal for overcoming challenges. Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15 by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402. September 15 is a day of significance because it is the anniversary of the independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. June is a month filled with celebrations and recognition, but it often feels like the focus on PRIDE overshadows other significant observances, particularly Caribbean Heritage Month. As someone of Caribbean descent, it’s important to acknowledge and celebrate the rich cultures and contributions of people from the Caribbean. For me, It’s frustrating to see the overwhelming support for PRIDE while Caribbean Heritage Month—and the issues of racial inequality and inequity—receives less attention. This is not to say that PRIDE shouldn't be recognized—it absolutely has its place. However, the challenges faced by Black and Brown communities, including those of Caribbean descent, are deeply ingrained and pervasive, requiring much more visibility and support. Being Black or Brown in America involves navigating a landscape of bias and systemic inequality that is often more visible and more complex. As we move through June, let's ensure that we are also amplifying the voices and experiences of people of Caribbean descent and committing to the ongoing fight for racial justice and equity. I am all for each having its rightful shine but not at the expense of another.

Mars Celebrating Black History Month UK This year’s theme is: “reclaiming narratives Honoured to have been invited to speak on a Mars UK REACH ARG Black history panel! I was able to share real life examples of challenges refugees face. Did you know that refugees are not allowed to work in many countries, whilst still going through the naturalisation process? Yet they are accused of “not wanting to work” Here are some key quotes for any external connections: ?????????????????????????????? “We may look different, that doesn’t matter, it’s our actions and impact that matters the most” ?????????????????????????????? “All that refugees seek is physical and psychological safety, is that a reason to be alienated by some segments of society?” ?????????????????????????????? “We the people are the superpower to make the change, seek to understand, show empathy, be kind that’s the change I’m referring to” ?????????????????????????????? “Be that person that spreads Unity, Love and Empathy” ??????????????????????????????
