Learn and grow with the Baton Rouge Alliance for Students upcoming event: Education As A Civil Right: Past, Present & Future. Join them, this Wednesday, Feb. 21, 4:30-8:30 p.m. at the Manship Theatre. The event will begin with a cocktail hour during which you may take a gallery walk exploring the 41-year Baton Rouge school desegregation case, then hear from a panel of experts discussing the impact of chronically under-performing schools on the school to prison pipeline, and will culminate with a message of hope as to the opportunities our community can deliver to children through sustained and common effort. We will explore: Historical Insights: Delve into the evolution of educational rights, celebrating the progress made and acknowledging the battles fought for equality. Present Challenges: Engage in a candid discussion about the current state of education in Baton Rouge. Together, we will tackle the impacts of recent challenges and address the disparities that persist. St. Kate’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) program received a?$100,000 Collaborative Urban and Greater MN Educators of Color (CUGMEC) grant?from the Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board. Funding for Fiscal Year 2025 follows the successful implementation of a CUGMEC award in FY 2024. The receipt of CUGMEC funds enables St. Kate’s to offer scholarships to BIPOC teacher candidates, increasing our ability to recruit, retain, and prepare diverse students for teaching positions. This is vital for BIPOC children, as research finds that they have better education outcomes when taught by individuals with shared identities; yet the majority of the teacher workforce in Minnesota is white. The scholarships help attract BIPOC candidates to the ECE at St. Kate’s and deepen support for enrolled students, who enjoy a flexible hybrid program that prepares them for developmentally appropriate classroom practice. New this year, the CUGMEC funds will also support a BIPOC mentorship program, matching small groups of scholarship recipients with current early childhood educators who also identify as BIPOC.?

When folks as me about powerful practices that inform postsecondary attainment for first-gen student, two of the first words out of my mouth will always be "alumni support". In my office, led by Jenny Zuluaga and Havilah Darnieder, dedicated to providing postsecondary support to all graduates of CPS district-managed and contract schools for a full two years after they walk across the stage. While our office provides the strategic support and funding, the bulk of the "work" happens on the ground, driven by practitioners at 100+ high schools around the city. The results? Students at schools our office supports are SIGNIFICANTLY more likely than their peers to enroll AND persist in college (aka not only are they attending at higher rates, those that attend are more likely to make it to year 2!). In fact, despite fewer than 10 of our schools falling in this category, our graduates make it to year 2 of college at a comparable rate to HIGHER income high schools (as defined by NSC). Talk about a powerful practice! **College Success Rate=Percentage of HS graduates (not just college enrollees) who make it to their 2nd year of college. Based on national averages for similar students, you would expect around 40% of CPS students to do this. Our most recent rate is 55%.
