We all want to make it easier and faster and cheaper for you to keep doing what you do best. It's why I directed the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, or Lara, to review all of Michigan's regulations and find redundant rules. They propose eliminating duplicative exams, honoring trade licenses, giving entrepreneurs more flexibility, streamlining reporting requirements. Governor Whitmer is right. I agree with her. Michigan licenses too many occupations and makes it too difficult for people in those fields to actually get into our workforce and begin working. Especially for people moving here from other states. We require fees, training hours, continuing education, often well. Beyond what is required in other states, and this is keeping people out of the workforce. So what the governor has proposed through her licensing department and what some lawmakers have said they agree with is recognizing out-of-state licenses and experience. In other words, if somebody wants to move here from Indiana, Ohio, Florida, Tennessee, wherever, in order to attract them here, one thing the state could do is recognize that license, let them get into the workforce immediately, begin working. As long as they don't have a kernel background, they've lost their license for some reason, and that they've been actively working, there's no reason State of Michigan shouldn't immediately begin letting people recognize that license through a state licensing department and get hired on in the field that they have expertise in.
