Hiring the right team is arguably one of the most important responsibilities I have as a CMO. It’s one of those make it or break it type activities that can have a huge knock on impact. One of the things I have learnt along the way is that it’s easier to teach new skills than it is to teach a new mindset. I’m sure this is true across most organisations but it’s especially true for us as a marketing team that is building our own demand generation playbook. Demand generation vs lead generation is still relatively new in B2B and it’s rare to come across anyone who has a lot of experience with executing a TRUE? demand first strategy. All businesses will have different systems, processes and tools - so generally it's a learning curve to get used to how a new company operates. But the demand gen mindset can be difficult to find and harder to teach if it has not yet been clearly understood. Here are a few things I look for when hiring into demand gen: #1 A true understanding of what it means to create demand. Can showcase examples of work they have done to build pipeline and close revenue with these programs. #2 A love for numbers. Someone who understands how to interpret revenue and pipeline numbers and build reports that can help direct strategy based on these. #3 Creative. When investing in brand is core to your strategy, it is very important you put your best foot forward. You need to create your own playbook, to be brave enough to do things differently in order to break through the noise. #4 Love sales. Our job is to make sales easier. As a DG Manager, sales must be your core stakeholder and you need to be comfortable forming a strong and robust relationship with them. #5 Adaptable. Things happen quickly around here, and sometimes we have to pivot from plans to focus on a new target. We may have to move on from projects we have worked hard on if there’s something bigger on the horizon. I talk a lot about the salespeople that are crushing it. Or the employers who pay crazy $$$ But the reality is... There are a lot of seasoned sellers who got riffed. There are a lot of great AE's who were given no notice and given a severance. If this is you... You have to be better than ever. The talent market in sales is tough right now. You have to learn how to sell yourself like you never have before. You are now the product/service you are selling. Why would a hiring manager buy you? Have a really good answer to that question... and practice delivering the answer well. Talk to future peers at the companies you are trying to work. AE's, CSM's, SE's, SA's, Product, Marketing, SDR's etc. Act as if they are the influencers to the decision maker (the hiring manager). (they will talk about you behind closed doors... make sure they have good things to say) Figure out what the hiring manager looks for in a seller. Be that person.
