In the process of building a national #fire #hydrant database, we would often get told by local governments that it would be a "national security risk" due to the ability to put poison inside of a hydrant. We'd run this by #firefighters and they would chuckle and say "no it's not -that's not how hydrants work." Here's what happens when you mess with a hydrant. Maybe the last shred of faith people have is in their firemen.'- Kurt Vonnegut, Hocus Pocus Multiple people were rescued from a deadly high-rise fire in Harlem today. The FDNY used rope rescues to extract at least 3 people from the burning structure today, when the entire department generally performs rope rescues 3-4 times in an entire year. The firefighters were guided to the victims by NYPD helicopters using FLIR to see through the smoke. This is that low-frequency, ultra-high-risk event that high-reliability organizations train and plan for....relentlessly. Today, despite the tragic death of one victim who couldn't be rescued, this is pretty much a success. A success only made possible by the relentless pursuit of excellence, the uncompromising application of the highest possible fucking standards. Nothing less will do. Period. The history of the largest explosions ?#19 T.A. Gillespie Company Shell Loading Plant On October 4, 1918, the T.A. Gillespie Company Shell Loading Plant in Morgan, New Jersey, became the site of one of the most devastating industrial accidents in American history. As World War I was nearing its end, the United States was heavily engaged in the production of munitions, and the Gillespie Plant was one of the largest shell-loading facilities in the country. The Explosion At approximately 7:30 PM, a fire broke out in one of the plant's buildings. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown, but it quickly spread to other parts of the facility, igniting the high-explosive shells and other munitions stored on-site. The resulting explosions were catastrophic, with the blasts heard up to 150 miles away. The initial explosion was followed by a series of secondary explosions that continued for nearly three days. These explosions created craters, demolished buildings, and scattered debris over a wide area. The intense blasts shattered windows in nearby towns and sent shockwaves that were felt throughout the region. Casualties and Damage The explosion and subsequent fires resulted in significant loss of life and property. Although the exact number of casualties is difficult to determine, it is estimated that over 100 people were killed, including plant workers, firefighters, and local residents. Many more were injured, some critically. The plant itself was almost entirely destroyed. The blast caused extensive damage to the surrounding area, including homes, businesses, and infrastructure. Ranchers: I guess it's time that thinking through this horrific scenario in the video needs to be part of our future fire planning. If you are fleeing a fast-burning forest fire (or, for that matter, a flood), make sure to open your gates/cut your fences for your livestock so they can run too. We all know they might not make it to the gate in time, so figure out the most likely flight paths and be ready and practiced to cut the fences in those places. (On the one hand, I think some of our brave cows would push through barb wire more than these elk can get through their fencing... on the other hand, I think the fence will be easy to cross once the posts burn... but unlike the branches and cut-on-location posts my grandfather used for fence posts, most posts are treated these days, so the posts are probably more fire-resistant than the animals... the last thing any of us want to see is a barbecued herd beside a line of treated fence posts.) We might not be able to save them all, but a little planning and forethought for emergencies means that maybe we can do our best to save as many as we can and do our best. If you're in a flood zone, make sure they can get to the high ground. If you're in a fire zone, consult a fire expert. How are prevailing winds and land patterns likely to steer a fire? Hm, I wonder if fire experts know that kind of thing, where a fire will go. I am sure it's not as predictable as a flood. I need to learn more. <note: I do not agree "fossil fuel companies" caused this problem as the original post said, I'm sharing this for the video and to discuss ranch planning -- all of us who drive cars and have air conditioning jacked up this summer, use plastics, etc., and, particularly, who vote for governments who reduce fire funding like Alberta's did last year, are in this together. As a deputy #fire chief I had to constantly balance available time, money and resources to ensure that our special operations teams were properly trained and prepared for low frequency, high impact missions. It wasn't always easy to see or justify the importance of those investments. After #HurricaneHelene, the picture is much clearer now.
