On 29 August 2024, the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) Philippines will present three landmark initiatives on heritage conservation practices in the Philippines through the lens of disaster risk management, response to environmental changes and challenges through adaptive behaviors, and how heritage is a driver in achieving Sustainable Development Goals. The panel curated these three projects involving actual local groundwork to allow more time for discussion among us as well as with the participants of the conference. The Panel Chairperson for this Session is ICOMOS Philippines member Dr. Laya Boquiren-Gonzales, PhD. Above all, the ultimate questions to be answered by the panelists are: what are the local impacts of these projects? And, what are the benefits to local communities or various levels and layers of locality? This will be the second session for the 2024 National Conference on Local History and Heritage at the Ayala Museum, Makati City on August 29 - 30, 2024. The conference was made possible by the Ayala Foundation, Inc., Ayala Museum, Southeast Asian Studies Research Exchange Program (SEASREP), the ICOMOS Philippines, and the City of Makati. This National Historical Commission of the Philippines activity is a program of History Month in partnership with the Local Historic Committees Network (LHCN). Op-ed no. 3 II 9 May 2024 The traditional portrayal of Africa in maps often overlooks the presence of African Small Island Developing States (ASIDS) like Cabo Verde, S?o Tomé and Príncipe, Guinea-Bissau, Comoros, Mauritius, and Seychelles. In this op-ed, Daniela Marggraff delves into how current map designs reflect our worldview or 'zeitgeist', highlighting a bias towards land-centric perspectives over 'merritory,' or oceanic regions. There is a necessity for a counter-cartography that balances ocean and land proportions, acknowledging the significance of small island developing states, particularly within the African context. ?? Weaving a better future for coral reefs and culture In 2019, AIMS scientists and Traditional Custodians first gathered on Woppaburra sea Country in the southern Great Barrier Reef and began weaving a better future for coral reefs and culture. The Woppaburra Coral Project was the first cab off the rank for AIMS’ new way of doing business with Traditional Owners. We now seek partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, learning from each other through two-way knowledge sharing of culture and sea Country. Our partnership with Woppaburra Traditional Custodians has deepened, and all sorts of surprising outcomes have occurred – it’s not just about the science. ?? End the week with a reflective paper on fundamental cultural policies! As heritage professionals, we understand the importance of legal frameworks, inventory standards, and conservation policies in preserving our cultural heritage. Check out my response to master students of public policies on the minimum policies a country needs to sustain its creative sector. Please keep in mind that this was done in 2022, and things have changed, especially in the Gulf Region. Let's continue to prioritize heritage protection, public access, and international collaboration. #MovableHeritage #CulturalHeritage #PolicyAndRegulations #HeritageProtection #LegalFrameworks #InventoryStandards #ConservationPolicies #PublicAccess #InternationalCollaboration #CommunityEngagement #ComparativePerspectives #HeritagePreservation #HeritageManagement #UAEHeritage #QatarHeritage #SaudiHeritage #GulfHeritage #ArabHeritage #HeritageProfessionals #NationalCollections

This issue has been a topic of conversation and series of studies. I am glad that it is finally gaining traction at leaders level in the United Nations. What our workshop showed was that there are steps that can and must be taken at local, regional, national and global levels to alleviate suffering and build resilience as we redouble our efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase carbon dioxide removal and strengthen both MRV and eMRV systems. Financing for all this is key and we earnestly hope that the climate COP29 billed as "finance COP" will live up to the expectations. In preparation for the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Sea Level Rise on September 25 at #UNGA, we are excited to release the Coastal Resilience and Sea Level Rise Workshop Report, which was produced following a workshop that was hosted by the Marine Policy Center at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in June 2024. The goal of this workshop was to review the latest scientific findings on #SeaLevelRise and #CoastalResilience to discuss community approaches to increase resilience and adaptation. We assessed lessons learned through the #ResilientWoodsHoleInitiative and #ResilientMassPlan and how they translate to other communities. Download the report to read suggestions from high-level specialists in science, NGOs, and civil society on how to increase coastal resilience and adaption at the community, state, national, and international level.
