?? Great ideas for the greater good! The first-annual CIP Pitch Night saw 7 teams from Constructor University present their community impact projects, in which students address social problems related to their majors. Thus, they not only put their knowledge into practice, but also made a meaningful contribution to the greater Bremen community. The seven projects ranged from those rooted in #sustainability and those seeking to harness #AI to projects aimed at providing access to expensive lab equipment or the local cultural offering in Bremen. For the projects themselves, students could pursue personal interests in previously established initiatives or create new projects from scratch—provided that they meet a trio of conditions. They must be related to their major, address a social need and be conducted in cooperation with a local organization. Students are required to invest at least 125 hours to their chosen charitable cause. “We are members, or at least temporary members, of the greater Bremen community,” said Alec Bohman, International Relations student at Constructor University from Chicago, IL. “We should be taking an interest in the local cultural institutions and giving back to the community—that’s what Community Impact Projects are all about." The CIP Pitch Night was supported by the Wolfgang Ritter Stiftung, which promotes scientific institutions and young scientists. This year, the foundation donated €1500 in prize money to presenting projects. The event took place at Haus der Wissenschaft, a non-profit organization designed to establish understanding and appreciation towards science to the broader community in and around Bremen. ?? Today, ten European research funding and performing organisations signed a Statement of Intent to support a collectively funded Open Research Europe (ORE) with a non-profit mission for the public good. ORE, the European Commission’s open access publishing platform, has been transformative since 2021. It offers cost-free publishing for grantees of EU funding programmes, supporting high-quality research through transparent, post-publication open peer review. By signing the Statement of Intent, the signatories commit to building a collectively funded ORE, enhancing equity, diversity, and transparency in open access publishing. This is the first Europe-wide initiative to develop ORE into a non-profit, large-scale publishing service, investing in open-source infrastructures. ?? Smiling faces in the EC in the Open Science team with ten research funding and performing organizations across Europe publicly stating their intent to support with funding #OpenResearchEurope (ORE) in a collective non-profit scheme for the public good as of 2026. Our shared goal is to bring this service closer to the researcher communities and expand the eligibility to publish to all participating countries and institutions; to maintain and further develop a high-quality scientific publishing service and embed it in the #EUResearchArea; to support equity and transparency in scholarly publishing. More signatories to the statement of intent on #OpenResearchEurope are expected by organizations who are considering participating in collectively supporting and governing the platform. ?? The current publishing system is broken! ???? The high costs of traditional publishing are becoming harder to manage. Many in the research community want to ???????? ???????? ?????????????? ???? ???????????????????? ???? ?????????? ??????-???????????? ????????????. Diamond #OpenAccess is a novel approach that allows researchers to publish their work without charging fees to either authors or readers. This model focuses on the quality of the research, and not on the authors’ funding ability. But, how will we pay for this new model? Will it really be cheaper? And how can we make non-profit journals respected like big commercial ones? Check out today's explainer for: - Insights on the current state of publishing,? - The benefits of diamond open access,? - The work needed to make this change happen! This recent study by Sible Andringa, maria mos, Catherine van Beuningen, Paz González, Jos Hornikx, and Rasmus Steinkrauss provides a deep dive into the issues with current open access models and why diamond open access is the best case scenario for scientists.
