Truly enjoyed HGSE's Education Now discussion about Family & Community Engagement in Schools!! The panelists, Karen Mapp, Eyal Bergman, Ed.L.D., and Dr. Shadae Harris spoke from both research & practice in the field. Josephine M. Kim was a phenomenal facilitator drawing connections & raising poignant questions. Their 30 minute discussion is worth the listen & drove home some enduring truths about this work. https://lnkd.in/eJP6cZhp Here are some of my takeaways: 1. Relational trust between families & schools is everything & there are NO shortcuts to building it. 2. Strong family engagement should be a primary goal of schools rather than a "nice to have" because it leads to tangible, positive outcomes for students. 3. Acknowledging the hurts or traumas a community has faced is essential to repairing broken family-school relationships.

We are excited to share that the Office of California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed two significant bills that will transform higher education opportunities for foster youth in California! These policy changes will provide much-needed support and resources for foster youth as they navigate their educational journeys and prepare for a successful future. AB 2137 allows county offices of education to use state funding to directly support foster youth, removing barriers that previously limited school districts’ ability to provide essential services. AB 2508 adds a $500 boost to college savings accounts for foster youth in grades 1-12, expanding support beyond just first graders to help more students prepare for their college journey. Both bills will go into effect on January 1, 2025, and we believe they represent important strides toward closing the education equity gap for foster youth in California. These changes will help foster youth achieve greater postsecondary success and financial wellness. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/epHAXpnZ #FosterYouth #EducationEquity #PolicyChange

Today, the Biden Administration is calling on states, cities and towns, and schools to cultivate a “culture of attendance” and send a clear message that students need to be in school. ?? At this morning's Every Day Counts Summit at the White House, the Director of the Domestic Policy Council of the United States, Neera Tanden, referenced the new Digital Backpack ?? created by the National Partnership for Student Success Hub; a set of “Resources to Address Chronic Absenteeism in Your Community,” that includes a curated set of publicly available resources, including a selection of Examples In Action (spotlights with information on how districts have worked to address chronic absence in their communities). One of these spotlights is the successful relationship between our AmeriCorps Promise Fellows and Minneapolis Public Schools (utilizing the Check & Connect: A Comprehensive Student Engagement Intervention model!) Check it out (pun intended ??)! ServeMinnesota Office of Governor Tim Walz & Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan https://lnkd.in/e4W_pha4

Redrawing district lines is not a new practice, but too often the effect is not to advance educational equity, but to serve affluent and predominantly white communities. This deepens disparities, leaving less affluent areas resource-deprived — a clear echo of past injustices intended to be addressed by the Brown v. Board of Education decision just over seven decades ago. The recent move by St. George to form a separate school district from East Baton Rouge Parish highlights a broader problem of educational segregation across America. This exacerbates racial and economic divides undermining the promise of equal educational opportunities for all, and threatens the health of our multiracial democracy. We are tackling this issue with a bold state policy agenda at Brown’s promise. We aim to rethink district lines in a way that supports all communities, not just affluent ones. Our goal is to dismantle the traditional boundaries that have perpetuated segregation and ensure that every student has access to integrated, well-resourced schools. Join us in advocating for educational equity, and for fair and just school systems across America. https://lnkd.in/gf7eR2vK
