Did you know that every CNYC member building has membership rights in the National Association of Housing Cooperatives? NYC coops and condos have benefited from NAHC's advocacy work for years. This week, Executive Director Mary Ann Rothman is in Vancouver at NAHC's Annual Conference, helping spearhead efforts to have co-ops and condos exempted from the Corporate Transparency Act and to encourage Congress to pass the?Disaster Relief Call To Action,?which would open?#FEMA?funding to cooperatives and condominiums. At the current time, co-ops and condos impacted by a presidentially declared natural disaster—flood, wildfire, hurricane, tornado, blizzard, drought, or earthquake—are?NOT?afforded the same?#FEMA?recovery?resources as single-family homeowners, even though they?pay the same federal taxes. H.R. 5337?would create access to FEMA funds to repair or replace essential major common area elements facilities like boiler rooms, elevators, roofs, and outside walls. With climate change and flash flooding affecting more NYC buildings each year, the legislation is needed now. If your co-op/condo has been impacted by flooding, contact your congressperson to ask them to support the Disaster Relief Call to Action?bill,?and consider attending EDF's event on flooding on October 29. #advocacy #coops #condos #flooding #FEMA #DisasterRelief #NAHC https://coophousing.org/

Wow. Yesterday I took a drive out to Outward Bound to drop off equipment for their Florida lodge. I cant describe the amount of devastation remaining from the flooding of the Swannanoa River. 4 weeks out from the storm and there is still so much to do. This disaster has displaced so many people, many that were financially vulnerable to before the storm. Entire communities were flattened or floated down the river. While driving by the Asheville Christian Academy I noticed entire houses flattened and laying on the sports fields. Its hard to put into the words the emotion from a passerby let alone those who are living in tents in front of their once homes. Floridians are probably used to the amount of water ingress to their properties but I am amazed by the amount of debris that was thrown down river in a matter of hours. For miles along this route there are businesses, homes, tools, household appliances, clothing, yard equipment, chemical containers, in ground gas station tanks, holding tanks, trees, branches all mangled and strewn across fields, forests, and other properties. Hundreds of cars, semi trucks, and equipment flattened, torn apart, and wrapped around trees. Bridges across the region that should have held were demolished by the debris buildup and hydraulic pressure from 30' feet of excess water. I sit feeling both blessed and guilty to have so little issue from this storm no more than 10 miles away. Unable to comprehend the feeling of absolute loss and a fear of what is to come for the people. To rebuild is to fear every rain event, to leave with nothing after such devastation, disheartening. There is always a glimmer of hope for those of us surrounding an event of this magnitude and scale. People inside the catastrophic area have nothing left, no utilities, no phones, no cars, no homes, no food, no consistent water, relying solely on the goodness of others and support from outside their world. At some point those people will leave to go on to the next disaster, the news cycle will move along to the election, to the next war. What is to become of the area that was so ravaged? The time to support local non profit organizations in the region is now, help them to continue the work into the future, allow them the financial foundation to rehome those in need, continue providing support to the people on the fringe. My thoughts and prayers to all affected by this storm and especially the Swannanoa area residents. https://lnkd.in/g4iH4CHX https://lnkd.in/gWJa7zpk https://bountyandsoul.org/ https://cfwnc.org/ https://lnkd.in/g2CRWGi6

Based on my experience in Western North Carolina, I would like to offer a recommendation regarding donations. Many individuals and organizations are eager to contribute aid in times of crisis. However, it is important to recognize that distributing physical items to areas in need can be a significant logistical challenge. To ensure that your contribution effectively reaches those in need, I highly recommend considering a donation to Samaritan's Purse. Their collaboration with the National Guard and Federal Resources enables them to efficiently deliver supplies to the necessary locations. While smaller organizations have commendable intentions, the lack of coordinated efforts can sometimes hinder aid distribution. Donating to a well-established entity like Samaritan's Purse, which possesses significant logistical capabilities and buying power, enhances the efficiency and impact of your contribution. Therefore, it is often more beneficial to provide monetary donations, allowing the organization to procure and deliver the necessary supplies.??https://lnkd.in/efR99naa

CODE BLUE WARNING ISSUED BY HRDC’S SHELTER IN RESPONSE TO ARCTIC COLD Severe cold weather is forecast to hit the region beginning on Friday putting community members who are unhoused at high risk for exposure-related injuries. Brian Guyer, HRDC’s Housing Director, issued the Code Blue designation which will begin at 7:00 am Friday and continue through 7:00 pm Monday depending on conditions saying: “This is always a very necessary, but costly action to take. While our Bozeman and Livingston emergency overnight shelters are not currently funded to be open during daytime hours, we are extremely concerned about our guests’ safety. We can use all the support our community can provide to help keep our doors open around the clock for anyone seeking a warm, safe place to stay. Getting people out of the elements is our top concern.” HRDC shelters up to 120 individuals each night and provides non-congregate shelter for families and individuals needing medical respite at a second Bozeman location. Regrettably, even with these facilities, seven people passed away while unhoused last year. Donations to HRDC’s Warming Centers can be made online by visiting https://lnkd.in/gGgY64Nq or can be submitted by mail to HRDC, c/o The Warming Center, 32 S. Tracy Avenue, Bozeman, MT 59715. Rallying for Hurricane Relief: A Call to Action for Businesses As Hurricane Helene left devastation in its wake, it is crucial for us to come together and support the affected communities. Businesses, both big and small, have a unique opportunity to make a significant impact during these times of crisis. We challenge all businesses to step up and contribute towards hurricane relief efforts. There are approximately 1.1 million registered businesses in North Carolina. If each one were to give just $100, that’s $110 Million towards relief for those in need of our help. We believe in the power of collective action. When businesses unite for a common cause, the impact is profound. Together, we can support those in need, bring hope to devastated communities and contribute to a brighter, more resilient future. We challenge every business to make a commitment today and give to relief efforts at samaritanspurse.org. ?Samaritan's Purse is providing relief throughout Watauga County, North Carolina, home to their international headquarters in Boone. Their response also extends to include neighboring counties in North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. Together, we can make a difference. Let’s rise to the challenge and show the true strength of our business community. #helenesupport #wncstrong #hurricanehelene #

As you consider your end of the year giving, gifts of stock or gifts from your IRA may provide the greatest tax savings when making your charitable gifts. ?? Gifts of appreciated stock can be one of the best, tax-wise ways to give because you may save twice. If you itemize, you receive a tax deduction and you also avoid capital gains. ?? Also, with most of our IRAs invested in the market, donors age 70? may wish to consider a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from their IRAs now. If you are required to take a required minimum distribution (RMD), a QCD meets that requirement and QCD is excluded as taxable income. ?? It may be great to consider a gift of appreciated real estate, such as income property or second home. Your gift can be outright or via a charitable trust providing lifetime income and significant tax savings. We can help you make the best tax-wise gifts that benefits your family and supports our important work.
Timing is everything. Especially to make tax-wise gifts to the American Red Cross.

From the Iowa Disaster Human Resource Council: Communities in NW Iowa are still in need of volunteer assistance to help with recovery and rebuild from recent flooding. There are approximately 300 open cases. Groups and organizations are welcome and encouraged! A part-day, full-day, or multi-day volunteer experience can be arranged. No experience is needed, just a willingness to work hard, get dirty, and help the community. Volunteers will be matched with vetted organizations who will lead in your clean-up efforts. Training, work equipment, and supplies are provided. Please wear closed-toed shoes. Duties for clean-up efforts will include moving debris from basements, and cleaning/scrubbing floors, walls, and studs. Some of the work may require the use of tools, which will be provided. Volunteers will use shovels or other scooping tools to remove mud, muck, silt or other typical semi-solid material from a home. Damaged construction-related materials such as drywall, insulation, floorboards, paneling and cabinets will be removed using hammers, PryBar, Crowbars, Cat Claws, and other hand held tools. Wire brushes and soft brushes will be utilized to scrub the studs to remove moldy debris and open the pores of the wood to allow the fungicide grade spray to eradicate any remaining particles that may remain in the wood. Volunteers will only be expected to scrub and help prep for spray. Spraying will be handled by trained team members to ensure the safety of all involved. If you or a group are available to help, please email [email protected].
