?? New Report Alert! We’re thrilled to share findings from our one-year follow-up?of our?#RCT of the Luminos Fund’s Accelerated Learning Program for out-of-school children in Liberia!??? The Luminos program equips children who have missed years of schooling with foundational literacy and numeracy skills, empowering them to confidently? enroll in mainstream schools. Previously we found that, by the end of program, children could read 4.5x as many words per minute and complete 2x as many addition and subtraction problems as the control group. https://lnkd.in/gqu2fMr6 Here’s what our?new follow-up?study found: ?? Enrollment Boost:?One year after graduating from the Luminos program, 75% of?out-of-school children are enrolled in government or private schools—?a?15?percentage points?higher?rate?than the control group. ???Sustained Learning Gains: One year later, the positive difference in literacy and numeracy scores between Luminos graduates and the control group is similar to the gains seen at the first endline, showing lasting impact. ??Inclusive Impact:?The sustained learning gains are similar across age and enrollment history. Across gender, children perform similarly on most literacy and numeracy skills. This suggests that the Luminos program generally empowers children of all backgrounds equally. ? ?? Advancing Brazil’s public education system is crucial to reducing poverty and income inequality and promoting social and economic prosperity. Recognizing the need for educational reform, in 2010, a group of literacy teachers from Santa Luzia do Itanhy (SE), Brazil partnered with neuroscientists from Unicamp, under the coordination of The Human Project, to create Synapse, a methodology employing teachers as activators and multipliers to improve public school education in the small and poorest municipalities of Brazil. Synapse is currently present in 52 municipalities in 7 Brazilian states, engaging more than 2,000 teachers and benefiting more than 35,000 students annually. Additionally, in 2018, Synapse Educa??o Infantil was established to focus on the socioemotional development of children in the first years of life – and is now present in 6 Brazilian municipalities. Collectively, these entrepreneurial initiatives transformed into the Synapse Network, an autonomous social organization led by teachers, with operational support from partners and investors, with the goal of improving public education in Brazil. To showcase this teacher-led movement, the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce, Inc., in partnership with The Human Project, will host a breakfast seminar highlighting the Rede Synapse's mission of providing quality and inclusive public education in Brazil. ?? Yesterday was the launch of The New Lancet Series that explores the impact of nurturing environments on child development in the next 1,000 days (ages 2 to 5) and the costs of inaction. Dive into one of the research papers from The Lancet Series co-authored by our very own Florencia Lopez Boo alongside her colleagues Claudia Vazquez and Jere Behrman, titled 'The cost of not investing in the next 1000 days: implications for policy and practice.' They explored what happens when countries don't invest in preschool for young children. They calculated the 'Cost of Inaction' (COI), which looks at how much income countries lose when children who could benefit from preschool don't get the chance to attend. Their research found that not offering preschool is more costly for countries with many children not attending preschool, particularly poorer countries. These countries lose a greater percentage of their income compared to wealthier countries. For example, high-income countries lose about 0.7% of their income, whereas low-income countries can lose as much as 6.8%. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/d8tmT5Af

EDUCATION REFORMS: PRIVATE SCHOOLS FOR THE POOR [Annotated Transcript] Nigeria’s public school system faces numerous challenges, including inadequate funding, infrastructural deficits, and a shortage of qualified personnel. These factors affect the quality of education and lead to poor learning outcomes. Private schools, often perceived as catering only to the affluent, are pivotal in providing quality education to low-income families, even in the Global South. Contrary to common perception, low-cost private schools have effectively served people experiencing poverty, often delivering better educational outcomes than public schools. Patrick O. [????] The Luminos Fund program in Liberia is helping out-of-school children (OOSC) acquire foundational literacy and numeracy skills, preparing them to re-enter government schools and engage with the curriculum. Our second endline results show positive and encouraging outcomes: ?? A 15% point increase in enrollment rates among OOSC ?? The first article in my Ph.D. project has been published as open access in the EECERA journal. The article addresses children’s transitions between ECEC settings, specifically the move from a group of toddlers to a group of older children. It particularly examines how forms of agentic actions emerge through children’s adaptation, resistance, and transcendence.

All early education and care providers in Australia are subject to the National Quality Standards. While these standards have always generally reflected the level of service and benefits to children who attend them, for the first time, research from the Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) has indicated that these ratings significantly impact children's developmental outcomes. According to the research, children who attend a service rated as 'Exceeding or above ' are less likely to be developmentally vulnerable than those in services with lower ratings. Neglected Conditions: Balochistan distract Kech Balgatar's Primary School. In the heart of the Kech Balgatar district lies a primary school, a beacon of hope for the community's children. However, behind its fa?ade, a grim reality unfolds – one of neglect and disrepair. The school, once a symbol of education and promise, now stands as a testament to neglect. With its crumbling walls and deteriorating infrastructure, it paints a stark picture of the challenges faced by educational institutions in underserved areas. Basic amenities such as clean water and functional sanitation facilities are a distant dream for the school's occupants. Students and staff alike are forced to make do with inadequate facilities, compromising their health and well-being in the process. Despite these challenges, the school remains a beacon of hope for the community. Its dedicated teachers and staff work tirelessly to provide the best education possible under challenging circumstances. Students, eager to learn and succeed, persevere despite the odds stacked against them. However, the plight of the school cannot be ignored. It serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for investment in education infrastructure in marginalized areas. The children of Kech Balgatar deserve better – they deserve safe, conducive learning environments that nurture their potential and pave the way for a brighter future. As the community rallies together to demand action, there is hope on the horizon. With the support of government authorities, NGOs, and concerned citizens, the school's future could be transformed. By investing in infrastructure improvements and providing essential resources, we can ensure that every child has the opportunity to receive a quality education, regardless of their circumstances. The primary school of Kech Balgatar may be broken, but it is not beyond repair. With determination and collective action, we can rebuild it – not just as a building, but as a symbol of hope, resilience, and the transformative power of education.

Imagine filling up the largest stadiums in the world, like Soccer City in Johannesburg, 70 times over. That’s how many young children in South Africa are at a crucial brain developmental stage and need quality early education. Yet only 11% will start school with adequate learning foundations. 1 out of every 10 children! What if I told you that a simple task like washing dishes could be a gateway to a child’s confidence and independence? This video is from one of our Kraaifontein centres and at first glance, you might see just a little girl washing dishes. But there's so much more to this scene—a child, her name is Mihle, is learning, growing, and becoming an integral part of her community. It’s not a chore. Mihle’s learning to be capable, independent, and valued. This resonates deeply with a Harvard study (https://lnkd.in/dbJdt6Y4) that underscores the importance of children feeling needed and functional to thrive. You can see her confidence grow with every dish she washes. Mihle is fully engaged, and the pride in her task is palpable. Her educator, who’s filming, is equally proud, creating an environment where she can flourish. The educator’s support and the Mihle’s joy in performing a meaningful activity make this moment truly special. When children are given opportunities to participate meaningfully, they develop a sense of competence and self-worth. They learn that their contributions matter, which is foundational to their growth and success in life. At the Indaba Foundation, we strive to create these moments of empowerment every day. Discover the Delft Early Childhood Development (ECD) Project! We are excited to share more about the Delft ECD Project, located in the heart of Delft, Cape Town. In this township, we’ve met extraordinary individuals who dedicate themselves to caring for children in the face of immense challenges. What We Do: The Delft ECD Project focuses on supporting children in their crucial early years (ages 0-5) by empowering caregivers with training and resources. Our goal is to ensure that every child has access to foundational skills and nurturing support to thrive. Why It Matters: Through conversations with the Delft community, we learned that child safety is a major concern. Imagine leaving your little one in a place where gangsters roam the streets and poverty is widespread. If you drive through Delft on any day, you’ll see children running unsupervised because most parents can’t afford proper crèches. In response, informal crèches have emerged to provide some level of care and safety. However, the reality is stark: 1 out of every 2 children in South Africa’s lowest income communities doesn’t participate in early learning programs. This is a critical stage in a child’s development, and research shows that early interventions are essential for future success. How We Make an Impact: With the support of Amazing Brainz, we offer women running informal crèches the chance to receive training while continuing their caregiving work. Many of these women lack the time or resources to access traditional training programs. To date, we have invested in 39 crèches and remain actively involved with 31 of them, helping to build a brighter future for the children of Delft. Together, we can create a supportive and nurturing environment where every child can flourish.
