It could be a tipping point. ??It’s hard not to feel the ripple effect when big shifts happen. One such shift came Wednesday when Lionsgate—the studio responsible for the John Wick, Hunger Games, and Twilight franchises—announced it had teamed up with artificial intelligence firm Runway for a “first-of-its-kind partnership” that would give the #AI firm #access to the #studio’s archives in order to create a #custom AI tool for preproduction and postproduction on its #film and #TV shows. ??#Runway’s forthcoming tool will “help Lionsgate Studios, its #filmmakers, #directors, and other creative talent augment their work” and “generate #cinematic #video that can be further iterated using #Runway’s suite of controllable tools,” according to a press release announcing the deal. ??“It seems like a significant development, but the #movie industry has been using all sorts of #technology and #automation for years,” Sag says. “So you could also see this as a natural evolution. "Breathkeeper" is my entry for the #Gen48 competition—a short film set in 100,000 BCE about a huntress forming a bond with a being not from this world. Created entirely within 48 hours using Midjourney, Runway Gen-3 Alpha, ElevenLabs, Epidemic Sound, and OpenAI’s new o1-preview model to craft the fictional prehistoric language spoken in the film. :) The third edition of Runway's 48-hour AI Film Competition marks another major step up for the scene. With 3,500 participants across 3,000 teams, this event certainly pushed everyone to the limit—300,000 credits to burn through, tight deadlines, brainstorming under pressure, sleepless nights, and boundless creativity. But the sheer variety of ideas and styles makes it all worth it. From what I've seen so far, the quality of the films this year is on another level, showcasing how far we've come in leveraging AI to create compelling stories—whether beautiful, dark, or humorous. That said, as the bar for quality and complexity rises, extending the competition time to 72 or 96 hours could unlock even greater potential. Still, the 48-hour limit challenges creators to think fast and adapt, which is part of the magic. For those with more ambitious projects, there's always room to explore beyond #Gen48, in AI film competitions like Project Odyssey (which gave you a month to create an AI short) or through standalone creations. Sticking with a 48-hour limit, however, will allow Runway to keep attracting newcomers, which is always a good thing! As we await the announcement of finalists, I want to congratulate everyone who completed their films—an impressive feat in itself. Lionsgate Partners with AI Firm Runway to Utilize Film and TV Library Lionsgate has entered into a partnership with artificial intelligence (AI) company Runway to develop an AI model trained on its extensive catalogue of films and television series. The collaboration will explore AI’s role in film production, with the goal of enhancing content creation through Runway’s suite of tools. Lionsgate's TV and film library includes around 20,000 titles, such as popular franchises like The Hunger Games, John Wick, Twilight, and Saw, alongside series like Mad Men and Ghosts. However, Runway’s access to the library will be limited, as Lionsgate does not exclusively own all titles. This is the first officially announced agreement between a major Hollywood studio and an AI company, reflecting a growing trend within the entertainment industry. Well this is an interesting turn of events, there is a low budget animated feature film released a few days ago on Youtube that is being marketed as the first 'AI Feature Film', but it looks like it was made in Unreal, with only the anim keys generated using 'AI mo-cap', some AI voices and a small number of other AI enhancements. I would hardly call this an 'AI Feature Film', but I do find it fascinating that the film makers are purposely misleading people on how this film is being made. There is an article in Forbes about this film that states it is "the first feature-length animated film made entirely with AI tools." So while many productions are using AI and are trying to find ways to cover it up, this film uses Unreal, and is trying to tell people it was all made with AI, weird! I can only think this is because using the term 'AI' may attract money..? One thing is for sure, this is definitely not the worlds first 'AI Feature Film".
