Give gratitude to the heroic Newfoundland dogs during World War II and D-Day: During World War II, Newfoundland dogs played an important role in various military and rescue efforts. These large, strong, and intelligent dogs were well-suited for tasks such as: **Messenger Dogs**: Newfoundland dogs were used to carry messages and dispatches between military units, as their size and strength allowed them to navigate rough terrain that was impassable for humans. **Water Rescue**: Newfoundland dogs' natural swimming abilities made them valuable assets in water rescue operations. They assisted in saving downed pilots and crew members from the ocean, as well as helping with search and rescue missions. **Trench Warming**: Newfoundland dogs were sometimes placed in the trenches with soldiers to provide warmth and companionship during the cold, damp conditions of trench warfare. On D-Day, June 6, 1944, Newfoundland dogs played a small but important role in the Allied invasion of Normandy. Newfoundland dogs were used to aid in the rescue of Allied troops from the English Channel after their landing craft were sunk or damaged by enemy fire. The thick, water-resistant coats and powerful swimming abilities of the Newfoundland breed made them well-suited for this perilous task. A soldier returns from deployment with stories no one will understand. These stories cover the range of human emotions: sadness, grief, loneliness, rage, despair, regret, and so on. When a veteran comes to?#VeteransEquineAlliance?(VEA) they will be gently coached to open up and tell their stories to the horse they decide to work with. Dan and I do not have to hear the conversation. This is a conversation between two beings who have been through similar - but different - experiences. Yet these two beings have everything in common. What can the horse offer? Healing, especially when the veteran returns for more sessions. We work with veterans in a way that uniquely meets their needs. What we do not do... is tell them what they need. Often a walk with their horse that involves no words is just what they need. Help us get the word out.
