It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of my Uncle William Nelson this past weekend. Bill was an inspiring leader, a great business mind, an educator at the University of Arizona Materials Science and Engineering, a veteran of the US Army Corps of Engineers, and one of the beloved founders and President of GLHN Architects & Engineers, Inc (he was the N). Together with his wife, Dianne Nelson, they made significant contributions to our community through their efforts with the Marine Corps Marathon Organization, Boy Scouts of America, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs benefits, and countless other initiatives. I am deeply thankful to Uncle Bill and Aunt Dianne for their exemplary leadership in business, family, and friendship. They both always had a listening ear, offered helpful advice, and ensured no one left their presence hungry. In business, Bill taught me that the role of a President is to make everyone around you successful. He believed if your clients are successful, they’ll bring more business opportunities, and if your team is successful, they’ll work harder to ensure your clients' success. One of his favorite quotes from Colin Powell was, “Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier.” Bill often led his teams with a simple yet powerful mantra: “We can be the best, we can achieve awesome results. Let's do that.” He taught me the importance of surrounding yourself with those who challenge you, people who take their work seriously but not themselves, and who can offer a laugh during tough times. He believed in working hard and playing hard, creating an environment where people thrived both professionally and personally. I want to share these lessons with all of you, as many may not have had the chance to share a glass of wine with ice cubes with Uncle Bill. If you had, he would have quickly asked about your goals, how you’re achieving them, and if there was anything he could do to help you on your journey. And then, he might have asked you to refill his wine with two ice cubes—but that’s a story for another day. Rest in peace, Uncle Bill. We are so excited to announce that the UMA Foundation has been awarded the Scaling that Works grant from the National MEP Network in collaboration with the Blue Forge Alliance Foundation. This grant was awarded to programs with proven success to build a more diverse and skilled workforce. Our team has been selected to participate in the Manufacturing Women in Leadership program and the Dream Team. This new program will complement the UMA Women in Manufacturing Initiative, supported by Autoliv. UMA will join a cohort funded by Blue Forge Alliance of other MEPs, including New Jersey Manufacturing Extension partnership NJMEP, OpExChange, Powered by SCMEP South Carolina Manufacturing Extension partnership ) and the Center for Economic Growth, New York MEP FuzeHub. We are thrilled to be able to expand our resources to help women succeed in leadership roles in manufacturing and to bring manufacturing careers to the K-12 schools in the Granite School District. Deeply Grateful. I tend to move quietly and with few words, but I'd like to share a few thoughts from the process and from sitting with the good news: 1. Exposure matters, and putting yourself (especially the unpolished and uncertain side) out there really does make a difference - for yourself and those looking for the path you've cleared. I've been fortunate to do things I once never imagined, not because they felt impossible, but because I hadn't yet discovered the spaces, the tools, or the language to make sense of it. 2. As an artist who has spent hundreds of quiet, solitary hours sweeping and rearranging shattered glass — If something matters to you, show up fully for it. It's important and real if you treat it as such, no matter what it is. That commitment to self, however slow or unassuming, has taught me that anything done with intention has its own value that can translate to all aspects of life, and good will come from it. 3. There's no deadline for growth or success. Celebrate where you're at, celebrate those around you, and embrace the journey on your own timeline. 4. Above all, I'm grateful for the people I get to work and share space with. They inspire me, and I want to get better at showing how much they mean to me. We keep each other moving forward, and we need each other now more than ever, you feel me? Invest in the people you care about and move with intention. This recognition is a reminder of what has brought me joy over the years. Cheers to the journey and to the people who make it all worthwhile. Here's to the next 40 ?
