Business Spotlight: The Rise of Coworking Spaces Coworking spaces have undeniably revolutionized the workplace landscape. Hard to imagine, but before 1995, the very term “coworking” didn’t even exist, nor did the concept. The first space resembling what we now call coworking was launched in 1995 in Berlin, Germany. It was a creation of 17 engineers who called it a ‘Hackerspace’—a nonprofit hub designed to foster community among computer enthusiasts. This collaborative environment provided access to tools, equipment, and shared knowledge. Fast forward to 1999, and the term “coworking” was coined by Bernard DeKoven, an American game designer, author, and fun theorist. He defined coworking as “working together as equals.” In 2002, Schraubenfabrik became the first official coworking space in Vienna, setting a precedent for what would become a global movement. By 2023, the number of coworking spaces had skyrocketed to over 34,000, with this number continuing to grow year by year. Africa joined the coworking revolution in 2010 with the launch of iHub in Nairobi, Kenya, followed by CcHub in Lagos, Nigeria, in 2011. These spaces paved the way for innovation and entrepreneurship across the continent. Today, coworking spaces are not just offices; they are breeding grounds for transformative ideas. Many of the world’s most successful startups—Instagram, Spotify, Indiegogo, and Uber—began in the collaborative atmosphere of coworking spaces. Today, we bid farewell to Amit Banerji, the visionary behind Table Space , whose impact on coworking spaces and modern workplaces is immeasurable. He wasn’t just a pioneer; he was a guiding force who inspired countless individuals—myself included—to think bigger and bolder about the future of work. Amit believed coworking was more than shared desks—it was about shared dreams, shared energy, and shared success. His mantra, "Create spaces where people can thrive, not just work," revolutionized an industry. I still recall his words during one of our discussions: "Real innovation isn’t in the walls or the furniture; it’s in the connections you enable and the trust you build." Those words weren’t just philosophy; they were the foundation of his work. Under his leadership, Table Space became synonymous with innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity. Amit’s efforts went beyond creating coworking hubs; he created environments where businesses scaled, freelancers flourished, and communities thrived. From startups finding their first home to enterprises needing agility, Amit’s influence touched everyone. And today, as the coworking industry grows exponentially—projected to make up 30% of the commercial real estate sector by 2030—it stands on the shoulders of leaders like him. Amit was a mentor, motivator, and an eternal optimist. His light will continue to guide us as we honor his legacy by fostering innovation and collaboration in every space we build. How can you connect with people in your local neighbourhood? More coworking operations are not in the town centre but on the outskirts, in neighbourhood spaces. I love the word coworking, but neighbourhood space and local workspace as an identification tag works even better for me. One of the most rewarding aspects is inviting people from the local area into your coworking space, even if they're not looking for a desk. This opens up opportunities to meet individuals you might not have crossed paths with otherwise, starting a sense of community and belonging. My favorite current example of this is Ali and?Carib Eats who use the Urban MBA Ed tech centre and coworking space by Old Street for events. ???We have a Coworking Values Podcast coming up with Ali about this! ?? Do I call this marketing? There is a big difference between marketing and a connection point. People only pay attention to marketing if it's relevant to them. However, consider how many people have yet to learn what a coworking space is. Inviting them into your space helps people in the general public and your neighbourhood understand your coworking space, how it can benefit their local community, and how it can help them build their careers, projects, and work. With the crushing loss of traditional meeting spaces like church halls, community centres, and youth clubs, the need for alternative gathering places in UK neighbourhoods has never been more apparent. By making your coworking space available for others to use, you're not only offering a physical space but also making a vital contribution to your local area, neighbourhood, and economy. Sam Altman hates co-working spaces. While running Y Combinator, he called coworking a "reversion to the mean" that "kills the best ideas." ??REVERSION TO THE MEAN “The average level of ambition & willingness to work hard at a coworking space is incredibly low. There’s this reversion to the mean," says Altman. A founder sitting at Norrsken's coworking space in Stockholm expressed the same frustration to me once. Norrsken is a beautiful space that does a lot of good for the Stockholm impact tech ecosystem... ...but most days, it’s empty at 6:00 pm. “Where’s the ambition?” the founder said. She was seeing mean reversion. Leaving work by 6 is not a problem in 90% of the cases...but it is a problem for the super-ambitious 10%. ?? KILLS THE BEST IDEAS Altman: “Coworking spaces do indeed kill the very worst ideas, but a band-pass filter for startups also kills the best ideas. Great ideas are fragile. All the best ideas sound bad at the larval stage. "Four people working behind their own door can keep the necessary self-delusion going. But at a coworking space, people laugh at you, and no one wants to be the kid picked last at recess. So you change your idea to something that sounds plausible but is never going to matter." ??At Nordic Science Capital, we like to keep our company ideas secret as long as possible--or ask scientists to stay in their own labs in the early days. ?At the same time, I know VERY ambitious companies like Tandem Health that are thriving in a coworking environment... "Vibe" was the very first name that Marcel Imbach and I brainstormed for our first fledgling coworking space back in 2016. As we roadtripped across miles of deserted highway, we proceeded to run through 127 other possible names (your first shot can't ever be your best shot, right??) before coming back to that very first one: Vibe Coworks. Why? Because "vibe" is, by definition, "a person's emotional state or the atmosphere of a place as?communicated?to and felt by others". "Vibe" is an energy. And we knew then what we've proven now: the strength of a successful coworking space is rooted in its energy. ? Energy comes from people. ? Energy comes from inspirational design. ? Energy comes from financial stability. ? Energy comes from the invitation to dare impossible things... and achieve them. ? Energy comes from having people around you when you fail... and get up to try again, and again.
