To get the benefits of the cloud, we need to understand how its pricing works. Good news, there are many models and solutions that can adapt to each business's needs and budget. That’s one big reason that makes each provider more or less popular. Let’s take #Azure as an example. In 2024, its customer base grew by 14.2% compared with 2023, and a global market share of 24% in Q1 2024. Almost 350,000 customers across the globe purchase Azure cloud services. Understanding Azure pricing is crucial for businesses to manage costs effectively, optimize resource allocation, and leverage the full potential of the cloud platform. It helps prevent unexpected expenses from data egress or over-provisioning and aids in accurate budgeting and forecasting. It also enables organizations to identify cost-saving opportunities and maximize return on investment through strategic pricing plans and services. Azure offers a variety of pricing models, like: ? Azure Free Tier: Allows users to explore and experiment with Azure services for free, offering limited usage for 12 months and perpetual free access to services like Azure Functions and Event Grid. ? Pay-As-You-Go: Users scale resources on-demand and only pay for what they use, with no upfront payments or termination charges. ? Reserved Instances: Users can reserve virtual machines for 1-3 years, saving up to 72% compared to PAYG pricing, with fixed costs aiding in budgeting and forecasting. VM sizes can be switched within the same family during the period. ? Spot Pricing: Allows purchase of unused Azure instances at discounted rates, significantly cheaper than standard VMs, but with the risk of being reclaimed by Azure on short notice. ? Azure Hybrid Benefit: Enables integration of on-premises licenses with Azure services, saving up to 85% on SQL databases and Azure VMs by reusing existing licenses. ?
