Does your company have a “Veteran” Employee Resource Group or VERG? These groups help Veterans better understand their new organizations and transition into civilian life. During the 2022 Society of Human Resource Management Inclusion Conference, Omari Faulkner, (a public affairs officer for the U.S. Navy Reserve) said, “VERGs are phenomenal programs and all organizations should have." He encouraged companies to also incorporate these other retention strategies: * Invest in training programs that help Veterans understand their new jobs. * Draft and commit to a strategy for recruiting and retaining Veterans. * Create a benefits package that appeals to Veterans, such as offering more paid time off and paying them adequately. "Our bottom line should be to better understand this community and elevate them," Faulkner said. Transition Hack for Monday! Strategies for Attracting Out-of-State Workers to Boost Labor Participation! Had a great discussion with a KPMG consultant on increasing labor strategy to include Veterans. One successful approach is direct conversations with transitioning Veterans and their spouses. I shared just how easy it is to find transitioning Military Servicemembers relocating TO Tennessee - 19 in seconds. We found every Army, Navy, Marine, Coast Guard, Space Force, and Air Force Transitioning Servicemember. The more information that gets disseminated on the economic benefit of relocating to Tennessee and its low cost of living means a larger benefit not just in the workforce but local communities. I know some agencies talk a good game of outreach but if they're not using platforms like LinkedIn they are massively falling short of 6K relocating individuals. Using this platform REDUCES a company's expenses and saves time with personalized outreach. If your a Veteran IN a company, in TN...its easy to have dialogue with Transitioning Servicemembers. ??Guaranteed to start a fire?? Reflecting on the past, I would have staunchly opposed endorsing a service member for a Skillbridge program that fell short of basic standards. My perspective has evolved significantly. ?? There's a fundamental issue here. I find it hard to believe that any reputable corporate entity would terminate an employee solely based on physical fitness or body fat percentage. What about the years of dedicated service these individuals have given to our country? Denying them opportunities to transition smoothly into civilian life not only impacts them but also their families financially and emotionally. ?? Moreover, does this practice affect a service member's willingness to recommend military service to friends and family? It's no wonder recruiting faces challenges and our national security is potentially compromised. This issue is a significant obstacle to post-service success and hampers individual thriving beyond the military. ?? No one is owed anything, and standards are standards, but this contributes to the veteran decline, and we can do better for those who have chosen to contribute to our nation. ?? I am curious about your thoughts on this subject. As always, we don't have to agree, but the dialogue is essential. We can do better; we have to do better. According to a recent article from Military Times, the United States Marine Corps has shifted its approach to focus on retaining enlisted Marines. They have introduced new bonuses, job options, and promotion policies to encourage reenlistments. The goal is to improve the quality of life and provide long-term benefits to Marines. And the results are promising! More and more Marines are choosing to stay for second enlistments, indicating that the efforts are paying off. However, there is still room for improvement in retention, according to Col. Eric Reid, the Corps' head of manpower plans, programs, and budget. The Marine Corps recognizes the importance of holding on to experienced Marines, especially in preparation for potential conflicts with technologically advanced adversaries like China. By retaining these skilled individuals, the Corps can reduce the time and cost spent on training replacements. While there are some concerns about the downsides of an older force, such as decreased deployment eagerness and higher expenses, the emphasis on retention has helped the Marine Corps overcome recruiting difficulties faced by other branches of the military. To create a retention climate, the Marine Corps has implemented various initiatives. Commanding generals have been tasked with prioritizing retention, and career planners are engaging with Marines earlier in their terms to discuss reenlistment options. The Commandant's Retention Program offers streamlined paths to reenlistment and greater choice in duty stations for top-performing first-term Marines. In summary, the Marine Corps' plan to stop Marines from leaving is yielding positive results. Breaking news for employers participating in DOD SkillBridge and for any transitioning service members (Marine Corps) just announced: ???The U.S. Marine Corps just announced cuts to the allotted time Marines can participate in the DOD SkillBridge program which will have an impact on service members as well as employers participating in DOD SkillBridge. ??While this only impacts the Marine Corps for the time being, U.S. military branches continue to struggle with recruitment and retention and it may not be long before other branches follow suit. For any service members considering transitioning out in the next year or so, I would recommend connecting with these awesome veterans and employers that are tagged below who frequently volunteer their time to help service members ensure a smooth transition.
