September is Suicide Prevention month. Although suicide is not an easy topic to discuss, by understanding how to support a loved who may be experiencing a mental health crisis, you can make a profound positive impact in their life. Many people may shy away from speaking with someone who is in crisis, because their behavior can be unpredictable and distressing. Remember, you don’t have to have all the answers. Just like when someone is physically hurt, your goal is to help the individual get the qualified help they need. Learn about behaviors that may be a sign that someone is thinking about suicide. Suicidal thoughts, much like mental health conditions, can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or background. In fact, suicide is often the result of an untreated mental health condition. Suicidal thoughts, although common, should not be considered normal and often indicate more serious issues. September is #SuicidePreventionMonth — a time to raise awareness and discuss this highly stigmatized topic. In addition to shifting public perception, we use this month to spread hope and vital information to people affected by suicide. Learn more about the risk factors and warning signs. If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, call or text 988 immediately. If you are uncomfortable talking on the phone, you can chat the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988lifeline.org.
