Embracing Sovereignty: My Crown, My Pride ? "Wear your confidence like a crown, not to show superiority, but to remind yourself of your own sovereignty." This Woman Crush Wednesday, I'm reflecting on what it means to truly embrace every part of who I am, including my natural hair. As a Black woman, it’s disheartening to recognize that the very essence of how my hair grows from my scalp has to be protected by legislation to ensure it isn’t held against me. The CROWN Act, which stands for "Create a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair," is a vital piece of legislation that makes it illegal to discriminate against natural hair. This law is a step towards correcting injustices that women like me face every day, simply for how we appear in our natural state. I wear my natural hair not just as a style but as a badge of honor and admiration—a true crown that signifies my heritage and my pride in it. It reminds me of my sovereignty, my inherent right to be fully myself without fear of judgment or discrimination. I encourage you to reflect on what your 'crown' is and how it shapes your identity. Anyone who’s worked with my will know how much I value diversity of thought. Oliver Shah sums up a challenge with a one dimensional view of diversity. “You sometimes hear bosses and headhunters say it is good to have so-and-so — usually a woman or a man of colour — on the board because they are “diverse”. This offence against language and logic (how many multitudes can one person contain?) is revealing. What it means is that it is good to have so-and-so because they help the company project an image of diversity. So-and-so tends to have the right outward markers while retaining the correct inward characteristics for a FTSE board member — an educational and family background that will be familiar to their colleagues; clubbability; an understanding of the corporate zeitgeist. They will probably have been recruited from the non-executive cocktail-party circuit. Their presence will placate the governance clipboard-wielders — but, importantly, they won’t rock the boat. I will mellow the argument slightly at this juncture and accept that optics alone can matter. If junior people inside a company or aspiring non-executives outside look up and see only what Sir Trevor Phillips memorably called the “snowy white peaks” of older blokes, it might not spur them to think they can make it…” “…These concessions don’t detract from the fact that most quoted companies have achieved an appearance of boardroom diversity without diversity of thought.” Also worth shouting out Matthew Syed‘s brilliant #RebelIdeas book on this topic and how you build teams with diverse teams and manage the dynamics to make as effective as possible. #diversethinking #highperformingteams #inclusionmatters

Today is National CROWN Day, also known as Black Hair Independence Day. ?? Last year, I intentionally took my headshots with braids. When I shared the photos, a close male friend asked me earnestly, “Aren’t braids considered unprofessional?” Unfortunately, this isn’t an uncommon thought or perception. When I started my professional career, I NEVER interviewed with braids out of fear of being seen as “too black” and worrying it would adversely impact the hiring decision. Black hair is unfairly discriminated against every day, and it’s a reality that Black people think about and have to navigate. CROWN Act Day is incredibly important because it simply celebrates our hair—whether it’s braids, locs, natural, straightened, or any other style. This day marks the inaugural CROWN Act being signed into law on July 3, 2019, in California. The law prohibits race-based hair discrimination, including the denial of employment and educational opportunities because of hair texture or protective hairstyles. This law needs to be codified in all 50 states because of the many false perceptions about our hair, especially in corporate environments. Today, I think about Darryl George and countless others who have been unfairly judged and denied opportunities because of the way our hair naturally grows out of our scalp. Black hair is professional hair. Full stop. I’m grateful my home state of Colorado has passed the CROWN Act, but there are still 24 states to go. "Nothing but a pretty face." That was the remark a colleague made to me during my Ph.D. years, nearly two decades ago. I was so stunned that I was left speechless. In that moment, I barely had the words I would certainly have now. The truth? I had earned a full scholarship for my doctoral studies. My research was recognized for its excellence, garnering multiple awards throughout my graduate years. And yet, none of that mattered in his eyes—because he had already decided that my worth could be reduced to what he saw on the outside. Like thousands of other women who watched Demi Moore accept her Golden Globes award a few weeks ago, I could relate to her story. Women—especially women of colour—know this reality all too well. Despite our credentials, contributions, or expertise, we are often forced to fight against narratives that seek to diminish us. But here’s what happened next. I went on to become a professor who won the Teaching Excellence Award twice. I then pivoted into entrepreneurship, working with world-renowned organizations like the World Bank, KPMG, and Seoul National University. Today, I am the co-founder of LYP Program (formerly Live Your Potential) that was recognized with the BMO Celebrating Women Grant Award in 2024, selected as one of 10 women-owned businesses in Canada that are contributing to a more equitable world. But it’s not just about the titles or the external recognition. If I had believed his words—if I had allowed him to crush my self-worth and self-respect—I would not be in the position I am today, empowering thousands of individuals worldwide through my work. So to every woman who has ever been underestimated: ?? Never let someone else’s biases define your worth. Their perceptions do not determine your potential. ?? Your work speaks louder than their words. Excellence, integrity, and perseverance will outlast ignorance. ?? We have a responsibility to speak up. While I was left speechless in that moment, I am no longer. I use my voice not just for myself, but for the next generation of women who deserve to step into their power without apology. Keep going. Why Penelope Bridgerton (Lady Whistledown) would probably make a good contrarian investor. I've always struggled with pseudonyms and aliases because it feels akin to being two faced. It may have a place in literature or the arts but being two faced only serves to undermine integrity and culture in the workplace. While Lady Whistledown and Banksy profit from mystique, I'd suggest it's nigh impossible to sustain in the workplace because stakeholders crave authenticity. So when Penelope Bridgerton sensed this and was prepared to be vulnerable and unmask Lady Whistledown it wasn't at all surprising to learn that her stature grew.? In investment circles, having the conviction to be contrarian is akin to being vulnerable and authentic. Having 'The courage [for your idea] to be disliked' (Kishimi & Koga) by colleagues is where investment value can often be found.????
