Today is especially bittersweet, marking the end of my summer policy internship with Clean Ocean Action (COA). They are a non-profit working to protect the waters off the Jersey shore via education, advocacy, outreach, policy, and community action. In May, I began developing my summer campaign to promote Clean Ocean Zone (COZ) legislation. Legal protections for the ocean and its valuable marine resources are crucial, especially as companies attempt to industrialize waters that should remain clean, wild, and free. I developed factsheets, brochures, and other resources to display at information and outreach tables at local venues including beaches, boardwalks, concerts, and farmers' markets. To kick off the campaign, I hosted a press conference at Lucky Dog Surf Co. This gave staff, volunteers, and shoreline business owners an opportunity to explain why they oppose ocean industrialization and stand behind COZ legislation. I also trained dozens of volunteers to represent the goals of my campaign and circulate the corresponding resources at information and outreach tables. I scheduled 15 events throughout the summer. Volunteers helped fundraise by collecting donations and selling merchandise I designed to celebrate COA's 40th anniversary. The most crucial aspect of my campaign was developing and circulating a public opinion survey to determine what New Jerseyans want for the future of their ocean. The findings will be used to shape the direction of ocean protection legislation and determine the hopes, concerns, and questions locals have about the waters off the Jersey shore. I used the data gathered from about 200 respondents to formulate an infographic and develop an internal report. To see a summary of the results, check COA's website or various social media pages! The insights I gained and experience I accrued will prove valuable as I continue working toward a career in environmental law and policy.

The FFN Academy cannot exist without our amazing members! Our network of students and young graduates is made up of people from diverse backgrounds and nationalities. Today we would like to introduce you to Marijn van Ark When did you join the FFN Academy and which city are you part of? I joined during my great internship opportunity at Future For Nature in the summer of 2023. Where did your passion for nature start? Already from a young age. when I was 5 I wanted to become a biologist haha. Mostly I was outside and eager to learn about animals and plants. It also helped that I had the opportunity to roam around near the forest and discovered how beautiful and complex nature is and can be. This connection I currently still have, but now I also realize how fragile nature can be and that we all collectively must do something to protect it. What motivated you to join the FFN Academy? During my internship I really enjoyed the setting of Future For Nature and took part in a lot of inspiring activities. Additionally, I think the vision of the academy to inspire and empower the future of nature conservation is something that must happen to make positive change in the world and thus it is a great cause to be a part of. What do you like about being an FFN Academy member? I really do enjoy the meetings and gathering of the members that all are interested in nature conservation which is not only informative and inspiring, but the setting is also really cozy and fun. Seeing that people share the concerns and beauty of nature and want to protect it still gives me hope for the future of nature. What (professional) accomplishment are you most proud of? I think mainly that I still always want to involve nature related aspects in combination with social development into my study and often think about what can be done to protect the environment and its inhabitants. Where do you hope your career will lead you? I am not sure yet, but I hope it will be something where I am able to make a positive impact in the world and also can spread awareness about the importance of nature conservation in combination with social aspects. What do you hope for in the future of nature? My main hope is that we will find a way to minimize the damage our society does to nature and that our future generations can still see and explore the fascinating aspects of the living organisms on this planet like I did when I was young. #interviewmonday #FFNAcademy #volunteers

??A day in a hippopotamus life ?? A hippo's day typically revolves around water. They spend a significant amount of time submerged to stay cool and protect their skin from the sun. Hippos are mostly active at night, grazing on grass. Hippos and elephants are often found grazing together in shallow swamps due to mutual benefits. The presence of elephants can help create and maintain open spaces in the vegetation, making it easier for hippos to access and feed on grass. What do you do at UH Ventures in one sentence? - I've been interning with Matthew Zenker and the new UH Haslam Sports Innovation Center with their incoming deal flow. I research, analyze, and compile a variety of data and information to assess sports-medicine and health companies/markets to help accelerate and invest in them. I'm also working on the upcoming SportsLand event with Patricia Colella, MBA, by helping out in all areas of event management. What are your favorite things to do outside of school? - I love to exercise and try new workouts, but more importantly, I love to eat. During COVID, I began cooking and baking as a way to unwind; I try to make a meal four times a week. My favorite dish to make is my grandfather’s shrimp and pea risotto. Favorite binge-worthy TV show? - The Office. I have seen The Office over five times and I can quote certain scenes by heart! What is your favorite restaurant in Cleveland? - Batuqui; a fun Brazilian summer dinner spot. What do you love about Cleveland? - I was born and raised all around Cleveland, and throughout my time, there has been one constant: the people. It was a pleasure speaking with the team at Marlow Film Studios today to discuss the potential regional benefits & developments the project will mean for the area, including High Wycombe! ? Commercial Benefits – Bringing new industry and visitors to the region will be beneficial for the whole area, especially High Wycombe as the nearest major town hub. Jobs & Apprenticeships – Infinite new opportunities for skilled workers and students looking to follow a career in the creative industries, particularly those within the Creative & Digital School of Studies at Bucks New University, a well-regarded specialism of the institution. Improved Transport Links - New bus routes from Wycombe to Maidenhead and locally around Marlow are a gamechanger and will improve accessibility in and around the area. Repurposed Land – As a former ‘tip’ housing the gravel extraction from the A404 Marlow Bypass build, the site will be repurposed in a way that brings positive benefits for the area – this planning application ‘ticks all the boxes’. The ripple effect of the Marlow Film Studios development can only be a good thing for High Wycombe - increasing footfall to the town and ultimately offering a huge benefit to town centre businesses, as well as economic growth of the region as a whole.
